Looking for a metal box
-
Old - new - anything really. But needs to be a minimum of 18x18x60cm. Can add an inch on that dimension.
What I'm going to use it for is a computer case for my miniITX motherboard (17x17cm). I'm going to use it as a retro gaming-box. Pretty much silent and with a compact flash storage.

Go down to your local army surplus store (if y'all have them) and get one of these, will make a cool gaming box.

If you go for a walk at your local land-fill site you will find many of these in all shapes and sizes. I think it would be neat to just leave the original material on the can....if you can find one with interesting labeling.[attachment=0:1uqytze3]<!-- ia0 -->can.jpg<!-- ia0 -->[/attachment:1uqytze3]
Yea, something like that would be nice. I've been looking in the locale second hand shops for old metal containers - with not much luck. I found on the net that a local shop as a old medic box. But size is unknown and the shop is closed until the end of the month.
I'm disapointed of how few second hand shops there are around Trondheim.Didn't think of the land-fill. It could be worth checking if they would allow me to salvage stuff. Not sure if I can though...

Unfortunately there isn't one AFAIK. Would be great though, I've seen some very nice DIY stuff made from old army surplus goods.

DOes the box itself have to be metal? Could you line a wooden box with foil? Maybe you could use something like this.

Hi,
If you need to have a very precise size or would like it to be a precise size. And you're good with your hands. Where I work there lots of sheet metal discarded daily. All you need is shipping costs. Or it's probably cheaper to fly ryanair!
Anyway it's an option if you're really stuck for particular size.

No, it doesn't strictly need to be metal. When I was looking at the second hand shop I was looking at wooden boxes, but none really fit. As long as it's an interesting box. Only thing is that I don't want it to be a big box, want to keep it as compact as possible.

I got some sheets of 1mm and 2mm aluminium which I can use - I have been thinking of it, but I'd then some some way to design it.

Hmmm... I understand the need to be small. I'll keep thinking.

I bet you could find some software someplace that would allow you to design a box.
Go down to the waterfront and check with some of those hardware stores that cater to the fishermen. Maybe they would have a box that would work.

Hi,
That 2mm Aluminium would do the job. As for designing the box, that would be the easy part, it's the fabrication that'll cause the real hear scratching!
But if you go with the "make you own" method, give me a shout if your stuck. Bending metal is part of my working day and I even have formulas for flat patterns.
I think I'm what you call old school
