[Plugin] SectionCutFace
-
That is why it is recommended NOT to use SectionCutFaces that 'Glue' while you model [unless it's a very simple model].
At every change to the model [or section-plane] the 'Glued' section-planes are updated, taking time to reprocess.
So it's much better to use the 'On-Demand' format and recreate a SectionCutFace after making geometry changes.
If you SectionCutFace is a standard type [not Glued or update-able] then these delays are avoided and you simply delete then recreate the section's face once you have made changes...I am considering making this more obvious in the tool - watch for developments...

TIG.
A minor suggestion: would you consider renaming "Glued" to "Auto-Update"? I know you mean it stays glued to the section plane, but I find it more intuitive for new users and probably makes them think better before using. Maybe a simple thing could be written like "Auto-Update (slows model)"
-
I'll consider the implications
-
thanks for this great plugin. but i had some trouble after upgrade to Skethup Make. When I try to pan or edit groups the model was getting slow and unresponsive. I tried to find which plugin was problem, by deleting SectionCutFace it was resolved.

Don't 'Glue' SectionCutFaces in your more complex models.
This has already been discussed at lengthChoose 'On-Demand' and update the SectionCutFace when desired...
Otherwise at every change to the model it will try to update the SectionCutFace...
-
it is not about using the plugin. the installation of it is enough to make it slow.
-
That is odd...
It has an observer that looks for tool changes.
I am looking at ways of minimizing its impact - perhaps that's it when you have zillions of objects to consider... I'll see if I can get its activities minimized -
well, we upgraded our sketchups from 8 to Make and the plugin set was the same in all of our 40 pcs. tested that by deleting plugins one by one, close&open SU and found this result. by the way thank you for developing these plugins so responsively.

A new version is now available from the PluginStore.
http://sketchucation.com/resources/pluginstore?pln=SectionCutFace
It renames 'Glue' as 'Auto-Update'.
The observers used for 'Auto-Update' SectionCutFaces are re-honed and optimized to minimize 'lag' during regenerations.
If there are no 'Auto-Update' SectionCutFaces in the model then any lag should be imperceptible. -
Does SectionCutFace work with Macs (OSX10.7, Mountain Lion)?
No SectionCutFace context menus available when section planes are right-clicked... -
It works on my Mac just fine.
-
You must have ONE section-plane selected - no more and nothing else selected either.
You only get the context-menu when that one section-plane is highlighted [selected]...
Works fine on PC and MAC for me - provided that simple rule is followed...

I did follow that simple rule, however, I made a stupid mistake elsewhere.
I installed the plugin to the reservoir folder (mysteriously named "Plugins" just by chance! ) that I made especially to keep and archive all the plugins⦠so it wasn't installed properly to begin with.
Now it's installed to "plugins" under Sketchup folder, and working fine.
Sorry to waste your time, guys. -
Has this plugin been updated to work with 2014?
I can't seem to bring it into the application
thanks

GaryIt works just for me in Su2014 on both PC and Mac. How did you try to install it?
-
It is an Extension named 'SectionCutFace': you might need to activate it from Preferences > Extensions - BUT when first loaded it ought to be auto-activated
Please note that it only appears in the context-menu if there is just one Section-Plane selected.
There are NO menu entries or toolbars... if that is what you expected. Please read the brief [and I think quite clear] Usage instructions...

@TIG,
Thank you SO much for your awesome plug-in. I love using it and it saves me a great deal of time.
However, since upgrading to SketchUp 2014 (I'm on a Mac), I have noticed some instability at times. Have you encountered any such problems?
Thanks again!

Please advise what issues, I see none, but you might have something I can replicate...
I have seen a minor occasional issue with v2014 where a newly made group's contents are not visible until you select it and edit, then everything adjust OK.
I have trapped for this in some other tools, but not SCFace - perhaps that's it ?? -
It doesn't seem to do with newly made groups and what you were referring to. To be more specific, it seems to crash when I open an existing file (with SectionCutFace items), or have a file already open and open an additional file. I noticed you're using Windows so perhaps it's a Mac issue?

Thia has been reported in another thread a few days agao.
It has been traced to SCFace [and probably other plugins adding/removing observers], it is a known issue with v2014 on some MACs - in PMs yesterday I was assured that Trimble are looking to address this.
Oddly I can't get it to happen on my MAC
Meanwhile I am looking to recast SCFace to side-step the issue.
Hopefully I will issue a glitch-proofed updated version sometime today...
