Should i migrate to ubuntu?

Hi,
I've got a Dell Latitude D400 ( it's like an old friend
) but recently it has become more sluggish. It's running XP SP3 with Office 2003 and very little else installed except for SU7.Now lately I've been considering replacing 60gb HDD with 180gb HDD and changing OS to Ubuntu 8. My concern is compatibility issues with SU7 as i'm not particularly adept at fiddling about with scripting to get things to work.
How do users feel about SU7 operating under Ubuntu? Should i stick with XP and just do a new install?

I heard that nVidia card might work. But it's worse with API card. And I've also heard that scripts might need modifications so that they have the correct end of line character combo.
Personally I would not use Ubuntu as my main system to use with Sketchup.

Does anyone have experience with so black edition I see floating about on the web?

Ditto for keeping XP. I run SU on Ubuntu and it just has too many glitches plus the plugin issues Coen mentions. Just not worth it, I'd stick with Blender for Linux.
