[Tutorial] - Building Wing Walls - Beginner
-
Here's a tutorial I put together on how to build wing walls for entrance ways. In the tutorial, I use Joint Push Pull, Tools on Surface & Round Edges. (Building a wall like this would be next to impossible without JPP and TOS) I also show how to correct texture tiling on a curved face. Total time is a little over 12 minutes. I hope some find it useful.
PS - I put this together for some relatively new sketchup users on another forum.....hence why I go over some of the basics.

Thank you Adam!
Your video is very good at demonstrating use of various rubies, which beginners like myself have not used much, if at all, as well as dealing with common problems as they occur. Also shows how fast modeling is done. I've seen some of the techniques described but not as clearly and you added in a lot of extra tips. I think you should make more videos.

You're very welcome Peter. I'm hosting some sketchup classes over the winter for people in the landscape field. I plan on making several more screen grab tutorials and I'll be sure to post them here. (Hopefully with audio)

Hi Earthmover
It's a very nice video showing how to use TOS and JPP.

Well i'm not really sure with that.
It can easily be done with SU native tools if you keep in mind to get welded arcs.
If you want, I can go with a quick video to show how it can be done very quickly.regards.
-
Regis, that would be great. I would be interested in seeing a demonstration of an easier way.
-
Well, I don't know if it's an easier way, it's just another way to.
the videoUnfortunately, SU have problems with hidden geumetry so I used weld.rb to get a nice result.
And now I'm thinking in another way...
I'll try tomorow.cheers

A bit different example but the problem to solve is similar in this tut I made for a slant ramp a while ago:
http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=627There the rotate and scale tools are used basically. (I should turn it into a more visually appealing tut however)
Nice to see different approaches for similar problems however - it widens one's mind. Thanks guys!

Gaieus,
That's interesting, but I would agree it needs filling out as a tut. I don't think it is plainly clear what you are doing in 4 and 5, and the goal is not obvious to the casual geometer.
One thing about Earthmovers tut. is showing-off joint push-pull which some seem to think is superfluous. Seems to work magic here.
It might be useful to use "group / delete" for the benefit of newbies in such tutorials. Often video tuts do not and it is such a good thing to discover.
Peter
EDIT I sort of succeeded in the sloped inside arc of the demo (GAIEUS'). On the outside arc I have problems. Is this method dependent on the arcs in plan being full half circles tangent to the straight walls? If so I have an issue how SU draws the offset outside arc compared to CAD.

adam, very informative video. thanks!
where did you get the round edges script from? i looked it up in the ruby depot and smustard but could not find it.

Edson, should be here - http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/viewtopic.php?f=180&t=10370&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=plugin+round+edges

I know! I didn't even think about it until I watched it after I uploaded. Normally my screen is not like that. I have a 23" monitor, but I shrunk down the screen for the tutorial and it bunched up my icons. My apologies.

EarthMover, can you please send me the link where I can download the rubies you used in the video.

New to sketchup, have managed to locate and download both the line on surface plug in and the joint push plugin. Trying to make a sloped curved wall much like above. Every time I go to delete excess my interior wall disappears below the "cut" Help? Very helpful video though. I'm amazed I've gotten so far so quick.

Can you attach the model just before you do that? Remember that in removing excess you have to leave any edges that are "used" by the faces you wish to keep. It's easy at first to mistakenly remove too many edges (at least I had that problem sometimes).
One way to remove a face or smooth curved surface: DOUBLE CLICK on the face to select the face plus all bounding edges. GROUP. Then DELETE. That should leave edges that adjacent faces need.
HEY EARTHMOVER! I see you visited recently but not posted for a while. How are you? Miss your inspiration!
