Give a topic, then people submit their model along with the amount of time spent modelling. The person with the best combination of fast modelling and a good end result wins.

Indeed that would help a lot, although it wouldnt solve the problem entirely, as people could just copy and paste bits in.

If I may enquire, how exactly are you planning to conduct a 'speed' modeling competition in an online forum?

Just give someone a 15, 30 or 60 minute time limit. Trust in people's honesty to stick within that time limit.

Depending on the selected subject, two hours is enough to model an entire home or disney character.
I was thinking in terms of like 10 minutes or so.

We could say 30 mins max then, with bonus points for faster modelling.

I don't know how the bonus points would work. I tihnk just keep it simple at 30 minutes flat.

I like the idea overall. I might be interested as long as I could find time and an idea to submit.

I didnt mean actual points btw, i just meant it in a 'more kudos for faster modelling' way.

Agree on a time to start and don't announce the subject of the model until the time of starting. Then models must be submitted by the finish time.

Still, depending on the subject of the model someone may already have made something for a previous project.

I always thought a one minute modeling contest would be fun. Well, I suck at it but it would be fun to see what other people can do.

                              Hi

There is a 3dsmax forum I frequent that does speed modeling competitions just like this. There is a set time, something like 8:00pm in England. The contest closes 1 week from that time, at which time a new contest is presented. During the week, all users get online and share sketches and ideas of what they are going to model. The idea being that everyone will think through their design as much as they want, but are only allowed 30 minutes (or 1 hour in their case) to actually model. On that forum, adding textures (materials) and rendering times are not included in the 30 mintes.

I would propose a similar idea, but 30 minutes should be enough. And I tihnk rendering should not count. It should all be about the modeling and textures. Sure you render it if you'd like, but the render should not be considered the final product.

That is my take on it. Here's the link to the speed challenege forum on 3dtotal.com:

                                    http://forums.3dtotal.com/forumdisplay.php?f=42

I like the idea, I sure hope I find time to particiapte.

Just little things. Like lives, jobs, families, time zones etc.

I'd imagine that a contest like this, on this site, would get around 20 or more entries normally. If it's done in the way you suggest we'd be lucky to get more than a few entries.

It would be a logistical challenge, but we could recruit some of our global readers to run the contest at local times.

Thanks for the link, made for interesting reading, have you ever seen a SU modeler participate, can they?

I would like to get into that action, the quality level is pretty good. I would love to go head to head with the Max and Maya modelers with lil' ol Sketchup (thanks to all our new ruby's I actually believe I would have great chance)

You could try it Solo, but my guess is that you will get graded down because a well modeled, efficient, clean model in SU does not necessarily look the same as one done in 3dsmax, cinema4d, maya, etc. And their challenge is truly about the quality of the model, the polygons, splines, vertices. SU doesn't work on that level (fortunately). But go for it, it would be cool to see if they would let SU compete on the same level. The renders (espcially yours) are at the same quality AT LEAST as most of them on that forum. Go for it, and post back here or PM me when you submit somthing.
