Don't know what I'm doing wrong here.
But I can't get Sketchup to recognize the faces thus drawn as being separate from the surface they were drawn on. It continues to treat the thing as one whole face.
You still need to make the surface on which you are drawing a group or component first. It's the same as if you were using the native tools to draw on a surface.
I'm sorry, Dave, but that makes no sense to me at all. If I make the target surface a Group it doesn't change the behavior at all.
One thing I did figure out is that I had the option to make the output a group turned on, which is why it wasn't integrating with the surface properly. If I turn that off, however, it seems to behave badly with the geometry of the surface and I get random triangles disappearing on the edges. It does, however, at least recognize the surface enclosed by the drawn object as separate from the outside.

Hi
Does anyone know how to get the arc tool to work - when I do get it drawing something I only get a dashed/broken line which I can only select little pieces
thanks

That answer is NOT good enough. I get the very same problem 4 times out of 5 to the point I have stopped using that arc tool. IT DOES NOT WORK properly.
I have tried all sorts of variations, on a grouped surface, on a component surface, on a surface that was selected, on a surface with lines shown, lines not shown, endpoint to endpoint. Same result every time. Twisted lines in space, very few on the surface and otherwise useless.
When it works, it works wonders. When it doesn't it takes me about a 1/2 hour to create a curve the old fashioned way with intersecting extrusions.
I have complained about this several times in the past, nothing changed.
Please fix it!

Maybe try to subdivide surface before if that works not as you want!
-
I've tried to select only faces that I know will contain the curve. That did not work either.
-
Have you an Skp file example?
-
Sorry I'm still having no joy with the arc
I've been using the ellipse tool instead. But even that is hit and miss. The tools don't always draw on the surface and draw weirdly on the x or y axis instead. I seem to get success when a purple dots show up but more often then not it's the red star for the intersection.
I'd love to sing the praises of this plugin because it's a great concept but I need help to get it working properly

Upload an example SKP file with a surface on which you can't draw a curve. Give us something to work with. Maybe we can help.

sorry just done it now
Ive been using a separate group with lines as a guide.
Ive been using the ellipse tool instead of the arc as the arc tool will not draw a solid line.
the plan is once the 4th ellipse is drawn to delete the above area then delete the Bottom of the ellipse lines (first time I did this I did a few of the measurements wrong so I know it works I just need to do it again)
thank you all in advance

The group you created as a guide is getting in the way of letting the tool work properly.
I copied the top edge of the cylinder down to give me a base line for the arcs and set a few guidelines to locate the ends of the arcs. The Arc on Surface tool works just fine.
-
think that my guides were drawn wrong so I redraw I but now I have the problem that the ellipses round is made up of many little lines not the one line which is a tad of a problem when trying to use jointpushpull on the cylinder surface
-
thank you dave - ill see if that works now
-
It's hard to tell what you have going on now without seeing the file.
-
well I'm getting a solid line but my arc isn't happening - its either a mess or something like the attachment
-
oh my goodness, I think I got it to work - I deleted a few of the guidelines and zoomed out - not the prettiest looking object but it does the job
thank you for sparing the time to help
the key seems to be to note where the blue/purple dots appear and keep guides to a minimum
-
Good for you. If you use the inferencing tools you really shouldn't need much in the way of guides.
-
thanks
