      Hi,

I had my 1st post here yesterday, but I guess it got lost in server backup hell.

The question was for a tool that would allow users to make a rectangle extruded 3D shape and lock the sq/ft. With the sq/ft locked, one could push the "X" plane and the adjacent "Y" plane would automatically pull in to retain the sq/ft. Hence a 100 sq/ft 10' x 10' cube when pulled 12'-6" on one plane would automatically pull the other plane to 8'-0"

Some responses were that "it would be a helpful tool!", "why would you need that?", "shouldn't be too hard if I have time." Wasn't sure if the last response was that the tool existed and just needed to be located or if it had to be programmed. I think the last post was from a user with "Smustard" in their signature.

That's all, have a good night, and thx for the help.

      Peace.

The last one was mine. The script doesn't exist (yet), and I've had the same idea for a script, just hadn't gotten around to making it reality.

I think this would be a very useful tool. I'd be happy with it being just 2d rectangles. I'd use it in space planning exercises where I'd be trying to come up with a workable layout based on client-provided program areas.

          Regards, Ross

            Hey Rick,

It's nice to hear that you and others think it would be a useful tool for program layout. I'll check in once in a while to see if you can find time to make it a reality.

            Peace.

I could use a tool like this too. One use that comes to mind is for preparing site plan studies to look at building shape options where building lines and floor area are fixed.

Almost a year ago Gabriel84 brought this topic up. I still think it would be a handy tool. Any one had a chance to take a crack at it........ Rick??????

you could do this with a dynamic component with 3 variables(length x,y,z) and a constant(volume)

“There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.”

                  http://www.Twilightrender.com try it!

xrok1 - thanks for the method - when I feel confident enough in version 7 to upgrade, 😐 I will try it.

I made this in answer to a request at the Sketchup forum. It is metric, feel free to convert it to feet/inches. It is also 2D, it would be quite easy to add some volume. Scaling the red direction makes the green direction stretch, keeping the area constant. It has editable parameters for a room ID, room name, and area (in square meters). It is my first dynamic component ever, so be lenient.

Thanks ANSII - very simple but effective.

Can't see how the LenX and LenY values might be both changeable by scaling, as interlinking them gives a circular reference !

Presumably the name (nimi?) etc could also be represented as a piece of text in the DC centred on the surface, on it's own layer so you could switch it on/off etc etc...

                        .
