a new problem arised. i am working on a fairly complex terrain with a number of bldgs on it. in order to be able to work faster i turned the terrain off. however, whenever i triple click anything, my machine takes forever to come back to use because it is calculating all the faces of the hidden terrain (i know that because the terrain is selected at the end of the process). is it normal? is there a way out of this?

Have you put the terrain on a layer called, say, "SITE", that's switched "off" OR have you just hidden the terrain objext(s), which is quite different ?

Triple-click will select all "connected"...hidden or layer off too. Group the terrain to "disconnect", then put it on the layer off.

the terrain was off, not hidden. the problem is that the kid who is helping me does not believe in grouping and assigning things to layers. so the terrain is not grouped and we are having all this trouble.

              Hi Edson,
this maybe a bit unconventional and too simple (and you maybe already thought of this) but you may cut the terrain, use the "paste in place" command to insert it into a new drawing. save. when you need it again, just copy it from the new made drawing and "paste in place" into your "real" drawing.

recently i was working with a complex terrain modell too. it ended up with 120MB and took over 10mins to save or open it. but i always needed to have terrain visible 😕 . this was pain.

              greetings marne

                thanks, everyone. good idea, marne.

as i said before, the problem was made worse by the fact that the students helping me modelled the site carelessly, that is, without grouping everything and assigning the elements to layers.

                    Edson,

have you tried sections your property in to multiple components... that could be turned of? using my 1 acre cubes, I "intersect" and then have 1 acre tracts I can turn on and off. but still work on the ground around the structure.

                    hope that helps

kris, this is a great idea, equivalent to turning parts of a project on and off to keep a file as light as possible.

i will use next time. now all i want is to finish this damn competition! thanks.
