A Bench and a Stool
-
Playing in SketchUp 2025. The bench and stool were modeled a long time ago. Cloth added with Clothworks. The cloth and floor have textures from the curated collection in the 3D Warehouse. Nothing but SketchUp and PaintdotNet. -
Isn't finally nice to have that extra flourish in the viewport. Really does add extra impact.
-
@Rich-O-Brien indeed it is. So quick and simple too.
-
Very sharp. Assuming this is some of the new functions in 2025.
-
Thank you. The "photo real textures" thing is a new feature in SU2025. That's how I created the shiny metal tubing and leather armrests here. The curated collection of materials (and other stuff) in the 3D Warehouse is available to anyone with a current subscription although the texture maps will only do anything in 2025. You might be able to download the texture maps with an older version of SketchUp and use them in an external renderer but I haven't checked that out yet.

The shadows are very interesting. Seems like there must be light coming from at least 2 directions.
But, I really like the model and the textures. I wish I had the skills to draw something like this.

I'm glad that's visible. They are coming from two different directions. This is a simple thing to do. I set Use sun for shading but no shadows for the textured image export. Then made two image exports of just the shadows which I combined with the textured image in the image editor. I applied a bit of blur to the shadow images to get the soft shadows.

this is a simple thing from SU2025. Straight out of it with no editing. This is a footplate attachment for a wheelchair with adjustable guards or brackets on the side to help keep the user's feet on the plate.
You can't see much of it but here's the 3D printed version in place on the chair.
-
@Dave-R well done sir. Both the initial model and the 3D printed version.
-
@ntxdave thank you.
-
@Dave-R Nice work, I have not downloaded SU 2025 yet but knew it hade a "neo" renderer. I did not know it would be this good. I wonder if Trimble will add function to this aspect of SU over time?

Considering they upsell Vray as part of their offering I doubt we'll see a rendering engine inside SketchUp.
Would like to see this Look Dev mode extended though. Soft shadows, screen space reflections etc
-
Interesting, I did not know about Vray partnership. The landscape of renderers is both complex and dynamic. I for instance do not understand how Twinmotion is not more, obvious choice for SketchUp users. Free, powerful, easy to learn and with so many free assets with rapid development. I do not have a clue why TM is not an obvious choice. feel free to challenge me on this
-
Without derailing Dave's topic too much I believe its horses for courses. Realtime engine with lower grade light path tracing capabilities don't have the same clarity as pure dedicated light path engines.
That would be why I don't consider TM or D5 in my workflow. Other opinions may differ.
Always sublime models my friend. You must love this new PBR flourish they added in 2025. It so suited to your presentation methods.
RIP Stylebuilder

@Rich-O-Brien I agree with you regarding better renders. Vray and others will always have the edge. i don't see Trimble bloating SketchUp with a full-blown renderer. Their arrangement with Chaos Group for the Studio subscription makes better sense than including a full renderer in SketchUp from a development and management point of view, too.
Thank you for the compliments. This does work well for some of my presentations.
You and I have gotten a lot of use from Style Builder. My guess is most SketchUp users have never even opened it or know what it does. Seems the vast majority of users want to create photo-realistic images of their models and don't like the sketchy look. I plan to keep it around as long as I can and will still use it.

Can you elaborate on this a little more or tell where to look this up?

The Studio plan includes Vray at ~$750/yr
-
@ntxdave sorry. @Rich-O-Brien beat me to it.
If you want to use Vray for editing, the Studio subscription is less than the Pro sub and buying Vray separately.
-
Thanks guys. I will stick with thr Pro license.
-
Slowly putting things together.
Need to model the rest of the chair I guess. Never done that before.
