Yes, Its the GI component of the light aspect in UE. Resources heavy and benefits for RTX cards.

You get all that beautiful bounce light and realtime AO but you can see even in Triple A gaming that the hardware to run this is pretty hefty.

The new 50 series nVidia cards, in particular the 5090 at ~$2000, are really suited and geared towards this tech. Apps like Twin Motion will benefit from that but the consumer needs to invest every year in GPU cards to leverage these benefits.

When you take the yearly cost of SketchUp, Twinmotion and GPU/CPU it means you need good paying project work to even consider staying competitive. Tech is moving so fast these days but its is also bringing with it rising costs.

I still prefer old path tracing engines rather than these realtime solutions. I feel they lack that physical correctness in materials. There's something I just like when it comes to authoring my own physically correct material and seeing the results.

I've the same fondness with SketchUp as it has simpler approach to 3D that works.

Lumen allows real-time global illumination, reflections, and shadows.

It simulates how light behaves in the real world.

Same as the regular path tracing rendering we are all familiar but with modern GPUs its now possible in real-time. Its just resource intensive.

I may have misread your post, but TM also has path tracing

On another note why do you think TM is virtually free, what is the marketing ploy? I can only think it is the same marketing model that Apple employ's, being: That at least where i live teachers are can get heavily subsided (by Apple) or completely free apple laptops. thus seeding an apple-centric school environment

So is it perhaps perhaps a way of market penetration creating a TM ecosystem. By making it free, Epic Games attracts users who would otherwise pay for these competing products such as D5. enscape. In real time I just asked AI this question and I cut and pasted the conclusion

            "Conclusion
The free Twinmotion model is a long-term play to dominate architectural visualization, increase Unreal Engine adoption, and challenge competitors like Autodesk, Lumion, and Chaos (V-Ray). It’s a smart way to get more people into the Unreal ecosystem while potentially driving future revenue through Unreal Engine, hardware demand, and cloud-based solutions"

AI also suggested that TM may bring out a paid TM with advanced version TM such as AI
I wonder what will happen to those of us who have dedicated so much of our lives to leaning how to model and render, for profit, Hobby, Art. I wonder if we will still practice our "Art/science" when images can be created in seconds, as i think AI will grow exponentially. I wonder what we will be talking about in 1 years timeπŸ˜–

I wonder if, having become addicted, we will all be fleeced too. Drive the opposition out of business and then wind in the windfall. A bit like microsnot.

Can't remember the original company's name that developed TM. But Epic obviously saw a very robust and clever use of UE to acquire it.

Epic has a long tradition on either acquiring tech and reducing costs to buy or making it free. So I would be confident they won't reverse course.

I don't use it so if they do change I won't be sore...

I just want SketchUp to remove the yearly charge and let me purchase perpetual as I see fit.

Having found that gravy train, not likely to change is it?

I wouldn't go that far. They need a recurring payment model to continue development.

But an option like a SketchUp only app without all the extra bells and whistles.

I have never used Trimble Connect, the web based app or mobile apps etc. So for me its just a bunch of stuff.

                      I don't need a swiss army knife. I just want a knife....one can dream

I have to concur there, very little use for sharing a model with folk who do not exist. Much like microsnot onedrive removing files from my pc and inviting me to buy extra storage in the cloud or lose access to my files and email. Lots of programs suffering from bloat but the return to simple times, unlikely now.
Too much invested in hardware/software sales which is a circular arguement if ever I saw one.
Brings me back to sawing wood, something I would prefer to do than argue with microsnot empoloyee's over why they think it legal or appropriate to steal my files and folders without consent.
Wow, irritated bar steward mode on or what.......

                            @Rich-O-Brien I'm not sure you'd grab 5090 for $2k in 2025/26. As usual it's 10k now

Scalpers buying up all stock to make profit.

I’d say wait until this period lapses before buying a 5090 if you’ve that type of disposable cash.

It may have something to do with the chip shortages.
