Tips, Ideas, how to get this surface printable
-
Hi Guys,
first of all, sry for my bad english, its not my native language.
I have a question to you, can you help me with some ideas or a workflow to get the attached surface printable?
This surface is created with curviloft and i already tried Fredo6 Joint Push & Pull to give his a thickness around 0.75/1.00mm, but it doesnt work. Thanks,
Greetings,
ChristophEdit: i have forgot to say, thats not a fix surface whitch i needed, it can be modified if necessary.
The goal that i would reach is to be able to draw Canopys for Quadrocopter like this one https://dqzrr9k4bjpzk.cloudfront.net/images/7780508/534771313.jpg

It's very complex and it's too small.
SketchUp can't deal with tiny edges < 1/1000" long. Therefore JointPushPull will fail.
Use the 'DaveR method'...
Make the group into a component.
Copy it to one side.
Scale that copy by 1000.
Edit the copy and JPP - using 1000mm rather than 1mm
Exit the copy and see if it says it's a 'solid' in Entity Info's header.
I fear that the very complicated curves will cause self-intersecting surfaces which can't be easily a 'solid' without considerable manual editing and tidying - all inside the giant copy...
Assuming you do get it into a 'solid'... you can delete the giant copy and the changes will be there in the original sized instance.
Tiny geometry can exist, but it cannot be created ! -
Hi TIG,
many thanks for your reply!
Im ansure what you mean with the "DaveR method", if i ask google for, i just can found topics about woodworking.
So i tried to scale it, but its the same result like i get with the unscaled object.
See the pic below. So this surface isnt able to modify correctly with JPP?
Whats the way to go now?
Create a simpler surface and try it again?
Use other Addons?
Maybe a different way to create it, with other addons (without curviloft)?
Or a completely other Programm?Greetings,
Christoph

I outlined the @DaveR method, in the paragraph which followed that sentence.
Dave is a moderator on SCF, and the expert at doing this.
@Box did a post on @DaveR's method:
https://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=624032#p624032There are many permutations in JPP.
Which one are you trying ?
You must work inside the edit of the giant version.
Multiplying up the offset accordingly. As the form is likely to make intersecting volumes [it loops back on itself] you might need to simplify it.
Thomthom's SolidInspector shows the issue and fixes some.
My SolidSolver is similar but fixes some more issues.
However, nothing can fix very convoluted and messed up non-solids...Try with a simpler form and see what happens...

Ok ok, i understand.
So i spend a couple of more trys to make the surface solid and modify it with JPP but i failed.
I tried the blue one (J) in JPP.
So i decided to try something new, a friend ask me, isnt it possibel to create this shape with surfaces instead of lines?
And i tried it, and surprisingly it works. Not quite as expected but it works (i have to modify a lot of auxiliary lines inside curviloft before generating the shape). Now i have a solid shape where i have to drill holes in it. Unfortunately i didnt have the Pro Version, so i tried Fredo6´s VisuHole Addon but it is not sufficiently exact.
However BoolTools² did a awesome job, but its not for free...Any suggestions for other Addons who works similar as BoolTools²?
See the pics for progress below.
Greetings

Dave trick works but I also run TT CLEANUP first then both the other solid plugins
