A Flame Finial--First Try
-
This might be used on the top of a grandfather clock or at the top corners of a Chippendale cabinet.
This was my first attempt at this. I see a few things to refine for the next try.
-
Wow that's really hot, Dave!

What don't you like about it? Looks pretty great to me!
-
Thanks Peter.
Doug there's a few little issues with the turned portion that need refining. I see them but maybe they aren't visible to others.

Inspiring... excellent craftsmanship.

Yep, I see the mistakes, must be twenty of them, really glaring! Absolutely ruined it for me

I knew you'd see them. You do such fine work, your eyes are tuned to see even the slightest errors.
Kristoff, thank you.

Actually the only thing I could find to complain about was that you modeled it instead of me
Really nice work. Any chance of some tips on how you did it? -
Thank you.
I'm going to be doing a tutorial on it so I'll save the details. The first thing, though, is to hold your tongue correctly.

I remember whenever Dad was working on something, building a shelf or another house, he would always have his tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth. Brings back some fond memories.

It worked, didn't it?

Yeah, I guess it did. Seemed like every time we'd get settled somewhere he'd get the urge and be off building our next house. I was just a kid and never could quite figure that out, but it made life a little more interesting.

Once upon a time models like this inspired contests like the "30 minute model".
Speaking of bringing back old memories. I read your post Dave and opened Sketchup right away. I just see that beautiful little finial as a challenge.... ...I'm working on it right now... instead of working on some other boring square stuff that pays my living. Thanks for making it!!

Looks damn good to me!
-
Try as I might to copy you Dave, the bloody wind keeps getting it.

Well, I'm gobsmacked by your finial, Dave.
