I am attempting to render a range hood in a kitchen. It is brushed stainless steel with polished steel straps. The inspiration image demonstrates the materiality I am going for. Why is the brushed stainless so bumpy in my rendering? How can I achieve the look in the inspiration image?

Also, any advice regarding how to get better lighting? I have can lights in the ceiling (omni light settings attached) and rectangular lights under cabinets, behind windows and various places in the room. How can i get nice even warm light without post-production?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

For the material - I would use a brushed steel pattern for the texture and especially for the perpendicular reflection slot. Then also reduce your glossiness to something like 0.75 and 0.7, and increase subdivisions to 32.

For the lighting - I would use a large rectangle light just off camera - it looks like there is an off-camera light source in your reference image - you can see the shadow to the left of the hood. It may be those are can lights, but they are more towards the center of the room. You can use spotlights or ies lights, but make sure you set your shadow radius higher than 1.0 (like 3 or 4)

Also - change your camera F number to something like 4 or 5 instead of the 8.0 you have now (which is more for an exterior shot) You'll get a brighter, less noisy render.

        Hope that helps!

        Andy

Are you using VRay lights in those recessed cans? It's ok to use an emissive material for the light effect, but you still have to place a light in the component. I would use an IES file. Your lighting is too flat in this scene. Try one of the preset stainless materials on the Chaos site as a starter.

If you go with Andy's method, attached is a stainless material map.

              Andy and Valero:

The initial results look fantastic. I'll keep you posted with more questions.

              Thanks again!!
