Arc convert? From .skp to .dwg
-
Hi - here is a tricky one!
A 2d question:
Does anyone know how to export a sketchup file to dwg - and here is the tricky part:
where for ex. a segmented arc in sketchup, in autocad will import as a "real" arc. Is there a kind of arc reader/convereter so the arc from sketchup will look as a smooth arc in auto cad.
Its a problem I always have when exporting to dwg for CNC. I always end up using a lot of time redrawing circles in autocad, or another cad program.
I hope you can help me.
Best
Allan
DenmarkP.s. I have SketchUpPro 2014

If you export your model as a 2d DWG, then all curves, including arcs/circles become 'segments' of lines in the 'flat' view.
But if you export the model as a 3d DWG, then any arcs become CAD Arcs, circles CAD Circles etc.
However you do need to export a '2d' version of the SKP, so there is no 3d volume to confuse the issue...
So you'll probably need to do some work on a SKP copy first, export no faces etc... -
Hey Tig
Thanks a lot - you just saved me for hours of future work!
And thanks for this forum - a great way of sharing!

TIG,
I don't have access to ACAD at the moment, but if you export your SKP model to a 3D DWG model, how do you flatten it - or am just a bit dense? -
Hi JGA
I just tested it - and i worked fine. You don´t do any 3d in you sketchUp file, you just export as normal - top view, parallel projection and export... and now is the difference - you export to 3d dwg. And when you open it - in my case in 2d draftsight, then its a cad arc.

TIG/Allan,
Thanks very much for this tip, it works perfectly!
A note to others - if you export just the edges, arcs & circles will be translated into DWG arcs & circles.
If you export faces however, they are exported as a segmented polyface mesh.
