Frank Gehry "Today’s Architecture is Pure Shit"
-
...and he is an important part of it.

-
The older one gets, the more inclined we are to call it as we really see it.
-
As Fernando Távora a late but respected portuguese architect and master of Siza Vieira, once told:
"In architecture, the opposite is also true!"
The thruth here is that his truth is true to him an to many but not the true thruth!
Best regards,
João

Remarkable comment coming from Gehry. I remember a quote by him in the documentary 'Sketches of Frank Gehry': "it must look more silly!"
Still, I do like some of his designs. I visited his Dusseldorf project twice and those buildings are, even for my non-architects friends, a joy to behold.

looks like his arthritis problem persists...
-
Well . ..at least he said it was "pure" Sh** and not that genetically modified kind.

Is he really one to talk?

That crumpled paper thing is too close to reality. I was at a dinner where a half million dollar sculpture was proposed by folding and twisting the paper foil from the inside of a cigarette packet. It was commissioned on the spot.
-
If you see his documentary, he does crumple paper.
Just to say... that's not what he said. He said "98% of what is built". He didn't call it architecture. It's an offhand comment that doesn't really beg analysis. My house is part of this, for example. Not really architecture, or even a nice build, but it works OK. Not pure s#!t.
-
I hope that in 30 years I can still respond as cool as him. I think his 98% are easily grasped from the air in the rapid response to the press reporter.
-
.
he has a couple of designs here now.

I look at things quite simply because I am not a trained architect and cannot calim to be talking from 'knowledge'. I simply ask myself if the different styling cues add to the building either in looks or strength and if I cannot find any of those on the internet, dismiss it. As long as it does not detract from the basic ability to perform the job intended of it.
