I put together a poster of work we have done in the office and sent it to a printing company to produce it on foamcore. They've come back saying that the fonts I've used are not showing properly and asked if I embedded the fonts when I exported it to PDF... what the?

I have used fonts that are particular to the project so I don't expect them to have them loaded on their system but is Layout able to embed the fonts so this is not an issue in the future?

I haven't seen a case where the font displayed in the PDf didn't match what I used in the project even if the font doesn't exist on the computer.

Out of curiosity, do you have Acrobat? What happens if you open the PDF in Acrobat and then do a Save as... to create a new PDF?

Most PDF 'printers' have a 'Save as Softfont' option in their advanced printing-preferences - so then ttf fonts get 'embedded'. If this is changed to 'system-fonts' are used, where available...
This embedding makes the PDF file slightly bigger, but means the recipient always sees the intended fonts, even if they don't have them on their computer.
I would imagine that LayOut follows the same embedding protocols - although its PDF printer has no customizable preferences...

From what I understand NO layout doesn't embed fonts - and YES Andrew this IS an issue for the future!

It would also be great IF LO had the option to turn text into outlines so these could be hand edited or kerned.

Daves trick of opening the PDF, check embed all fonts and save, is probably your best option!
