Precise Scaling?
-
When I'm using the native scale tool in sketchup it always snaps the scaling to .01 intervals.
-
Is there a way to get it to snap to smaller intervals?
-
Using Fredo's amazing Fredoscale I can never scale something which is close in it's scaling to the original scaling because it always snaps to the original size when I'm around .05 from the original (when I'm looking to scale .00001 without inputting those numbers). Even if I try to scale once to a scaling which is far from what I want, and then try to rescale (hoping that it won't snap anymore) it still snaps to the original.
- On a general note - Fredo, your scale tools are priceless! though at times, I am completely lost when trying to figure out what the various tools are trying to snap to. They never snap to anything coherent or something useful...

Why not? You can type 0.9999 in the VCB very fast...
-
Did you try to zoom in very close? The inference distance is zoom dependent and gets smaller this way.

It's not convenient when you have to type .999998 .999997 .999996 trying to get to the right place. and what if it were .4569 .4568... or what ever the precision factor may be.
There should be a visual way to do this.I am trying to scale an aerial photo onto a map... and actually I have just come up with a workaround to the problem by creating a grid of lines at the approximate interval I want, and using the native scale tool while snapping to those lines as I scale. Not very difficult to do actually, but it would still be nice if I could do without these guides, or without typing long numbers.
Edit: added an explanation video:

That would work, but in this case it is hard to zoom because the object being scaled is huge and it's scale handles are far from what I am trying to align.
Just added a video with a workaround. -
If you offset some guidelines at the required distance you can snap to those when pulling a scaling handle...
But why not come at this from another direction...
If the object in question is a group or component... then edit it.
Use the Tapemeasure tool and pick two points that are a known distance a part.
The VCB will show say 123456.7
But you know that it ought to be 123456.1, so immediately type that in the VCB +<enter>
When prompted say Yes to rescale the contents of the group/component.
Now the object is the exact size you wanted ?
You don't need to worry about calculating tiny scaling factors like 0.99999... -

You don't need to worry about calculating tiny scaling factors like 0.99999...Using the tape measure is possible when the aerial is in perfect proportions to the plan.
In my case at hand both orientation and proportions are off, so I need to continuously see the scaling differences at each and every point to get an approximate average precision... To make sure I don't get a situation where a few buildings are right while others are off scale and position. It can be very tricky and time consuming which is why a visual method is preferable. -
Since the photo image can be used as a texture... why not try that on a flat surface and then use the Texture tools to rescale the image slightly ?
There are also several plugins that do this kind of adjustment - my own TextureTools let you 'nudge' a texture's scaling [and its position and rotation] in one direction only [if desired] using dialog entered values and then key presses to nudge... -
This reminds me of the way things had to be done in SU6 to get colour textures on terrain. The technique was set out in detail in a go2school video. Not sure if its available from them still - it was a great help to me at the time.
The technique was to explode the mesh of the B&W, get colour imagery from Google Earth as PNG, Project as Texture, measure on mesh then use the tapemeasure to scale. Final adjustments were possible using the pin tools.
Hope this helps!
