      Do you mean .rbz?

RBZ is a newish format for installing plugins introduced in Sketchup 8. Its just a zip file with the plugin inside and can be installed in Sketchup 8 and 2013 via Preferences > Extensions.

Thanks Dave - but I couldn't find Housebuilder in the plugins store.

Looks like HouseBuilder is available here, though. It'll download as a ZIP file. Change .zip to .rbz and install it using Preferences>Extensions>[Install Extensions...]

As I wrote previously don't just copy plugins from your old Plugins folder.

d12dozr I had a housebuilder.zip file in S8 so I copied it into 2013 and unzipped it in the 2013 folder
I then went to install new plugin and 2013 wanted a rb? file and wouldn't display the rb file.

I guess you mean a RBZ file ?

This is just a standard ZIP file with a changed suffix.
Most Plugins now come as RBZ archives, which allow a foolproof AutoInstall...

You can still install manually, but AutoInstall is safest.

                You can have v8 & v2013 coexisting
It's just that a SKP will try to open in the last used SketchUp.
You CAN launch the version of SketchUp you want and open files within it... always remembering that a file Saved in v2013 won't open in v8 unless you do a Save_as and choose v8 as its type...

PS: Housebuilder is from Didier's site...
                It's a ZIP file.
Rename it with a final .RBZ, and you can then use Preferences > Extensions > Install... button.
Or with v2.0.0 of the SCF toolset [at the end of its beta testing with Premium Members] you have an even better installer, which also works on ZIPs too...

Thanks Dave - but that version is from 2007!

I'll try again - yes TIG it appears sketchup loads from the latest version and there appears to be no way of changing it. As I use the program everyday for 10 hours a day I found it damned annoying!

John, the site is run by the author of the plugin.

Best practice is to download fresh copies of plugins rather than transfer them from your older installation.

As for opening which version of SU opens when you try to open an existing file directly, the behavior you see is the same as it has always been and is not unique to SketchUp.

Thanks guys for your concern and your help.

I've reinstalled 2013 and I copied the zip files of housebuilder and layer manager to the plugins folder of 2013 and unzipped them there. I then restarted 2013 and it recognized them and I now have them in 2013.
Despite de-clicking "make 2013 your default .skp program" it still wanted to open .skp files in 2013 but I managed to over-ride it and now I can operate both programs.

I'm not exactly sure what 2013 is offering - clearly the video export is superior but it's not exactly worth the $500+ dollars the want for the new program. Why should I outlay that amount for a program I already have. Surely a sketchup pro video upgrade for %39.95 may have been more appropriate.

Are you upgrading from SU8 Pro? If so, you'd pay an upgrade price not the full amount. There's a heck of a lot more to SU 2013 Pro than just the video export quality increase. If you use LayOut you'll find huge improvements there and there's a lot of stuff in SU although mostly under the hood stuff.

Thanks Dave - all is fine - I upgraded for $95 - well worth it.
