I make my trees using OnyTree. There is a tutorial up on the Chaos site on my workflow. The thing I like about Onyx is that I can export direct to OBJ and use the ply2vrmesh converter to make the vrmesh file. No need for Max or Blender on the super hipoly stuff.
If you use Evermotion trees, you need VRay for Max so you can make the vrmesh file.
I have also put together a tutorial on the Chaos site on how to make a mesh from Blender, so if you can get it imported into Blender, you can make a mesh of it.

I use X-Frog. They also offer many formats for their trees, such as obj or 3ds.
