SketchUp 2013 Gripes & Bitchin' ONLY ;)
-
Let me shed some light here...
There are no "moderators" over the SU Goups ("Forums") but a certain group of (what it is used to be called during Google times) "Top Contributors" Emphasized; "Contributors". No power in hands (like the mods have here) or anything - they are "just" contributors who happen to be "top". (like myself as a matter of fact).
On a side note, they are also called as "SketchUp Sages". A title so far only given by the SU Team to certain members of the SU Community.
Some of them are also active here (and are "Top SketchUcators") while others have chosen to be silent. But they are here and are respected members of the community. Some are a bit hard to handle. But hey; I am not an easy-going person myself either!

WTF?!
I thought this was all about software. But you guys are ... what? Some kind of cult? Some of you are Masters and some of you have taken a Vow of Silence? And a few have transcended to become Sages? Do the Sages wear different robes than those who have Vowed Silence? Is there, like a holy book or something? Can I join? Do I have to surrender my bank account? Is this the group that Katie Holmes is running away from?Signed: Confused

Don't you find criticizing a decision to remain silent a little hypocritical...when your own profile contains absolutely zilch?
For myself, I tried Google Groups very briefly after @Last closed down and before this place kicked off to any great degree. I found it as appealing as a Tax Return, and told them so...before I left.
On a broader note, now that SU is no longer part of the Google Empire, there doesn't seem to be any particular reason why it's official forum has to remain hampered by the visual desert of the Groups. Somebody ought to be pressing Trimble to give them web space for something like they had before...but better.
-
The "Sages" or "Top Contributors" (a system Google uses all over its product forums) is not merely a bunch of knowledgeablemembers but also who are activeand helpful- like Top SketchUcators here. There's one particular member there who is not only a TC for SketchUp but also for Google Earth (yes, I know it's something many folks do not care about here). There are lots of knowledgeable folks around here as well but since they are not too active, we cannot promote them to be TS's.
The term "sage" came from the developer team and means no more than a "localised" term for what later became (officially) "Top Contributors". I do not think the whole matter should be overemphasized however.
-
Although they said that most of the previous @Last forum content would be merged into the new Google Groups, but I don't think much got transferred...
There were so much great info in that forum, which they just dropped on the floor back then...I appreciate that we have SCF today...!
-
The problem is that since the @Last forums were migrated to the GGroups software, Google changed the product forum software twice at least and then the content could not be moved.
I remember however that when we changed the forum software in 2007, we moved all the content manually (as the two were not compatible). I know it sounds crazy but we did not want to lose anything.
-
I just feel I must say that Sketchucation is THE best community I've ever visited/been part of.
So helpful and full of information and other great stuff.
Without you I don't know if I would want to use SU anymore.(Sorry, no bitching in this post.)

lol.. when you put it that way, it does start sounding very odd
(fwiw, I'm not a sage or silent member or anything like that though I do have a few hundred posts at the google groups forum)
I suppose the arsehole post was from gully?
when I first read his posts, I had a similar feeling as you.. but after a while, I noticed people would call him out on it but he'd take it in stride.. ends up, he does give out a lot of proper advice and help etc.
dunno, I like reading his stuff now.. usually as blunt as can be which translates, to me at least, funny as !&@% -

Gee - maybe take a chill pill? My post was meant as humor and I wasn't criticizing anyone for being 'silent' - I was making a joke. I don't keep track of who posts and who doesn't ... none of my business. As far as my profile - it never occurred to me fill it in. I don't think I've ever looked at anyone else's profile so I give no thought to my own.
Let's see ... what would it say? ... 'Professional draftsman (over worked and under paid, beaten down like a dog by the IRS). Loves SketchUp (but flirting with Rhino and thinking about having a full blown extra marital affair leading, maybe to divorce), hates AutoCAD but uses it 4 or 5 hrs a day.
Probably the same profile that most people here would have .... no?

Gee - maybe physician heal thyself? I'm not the one bitching on multiple levels; if I was any more chilled I'd give myself frostbite. Still...if it eases your angst...

I think it's time to split this thread from "Skethcup 2013 Gripes & Bitchin'" cause it has become "plain Gripes & Bitchin'" ...
Back to Skethcup 2013... From all I've read here and around. I see no reason to get my company to upgrade! How about all the rest of you out there?
I'd upgrade if we were to use Layout... but we don't. Sadly waiting for the next release...
-
Mmmmm...I couldn't even convince the large architectural company I worked for to upgrade the Pro licenses from v.7 to v.8.
So I can imagine that staff in other firms struggle to lobby internally to upgrade to 2013.
Trimble did put a stick in the door with the Free version not for commercial use .
So they do enforce aggressively converting Free seats to Pro seats.
A lot of money for no benefit...
Also, a lot of firms growl under the yearly Revit/Autocad subscription cost.
Seeing that Sketchup goes the same route (2013..2014...) becomes 'another' financial software burden for many.
No problem for the small one/two person firms that will find their way to piracy...however a concern for the bigger fish. -
Where is the 'Extension Warehouse Gripes & Bitchin' ONLY ! forum
I want to upgrade several (purchased) plugins, within the one year upgrade period.
I have been directed to the 'Extension Warehouse'Tell Me ... do you really need a Google Account, in order to 'sign in',
as a prerequisite to download a plugin !! WTFI cut loose from invasive Google Gmail years ago. I know, strange,
but I just have a problem with my email being scanned without
my consent or knowledge. The 'evil Google' .. I read about that somewhere...I thought Sketchup broke away from Google !
What in-the-hell is going here ?Ooohh, I forgot. . . . You don't have to use it . . . what does that mean ? .. go pound sand ?
No, Just flush all my valuable time, money and work-product down the toilet.
Truly reprehensible !!So, keeping with the spirit of this forum :
I bought SU8 Pro two months ago. I learned that I do not get customary
upgrades within a one-year period because they call it a new version
since the name has change (SU 2013) ... SU 2013 is not a new version !
What an insult! . . . Hello, they're still using Ruby 1.6
and I'm being forced into a Google Account to get plugin's no matter what.
Of course, I don't have to use it !Shame on You !! Sketchup and Trimble
Can you spell "Bait and Switch" ?
-
I bought Sketchup 8 because I needed it. So far I have had a tremendous ball with it and learned a heck of a lot about using Skup by browsing this forum. I have produced architectural drawings and construction drawings for several housing projects. Along with numerous welding projects of my own - vehicles, tools and of course my (in-)famous inventions.
A couple of years ago I left Google because I hate what they are doing. In short - I don´t need Google.
And now I´ll be leaving Trimble. Simply because they don´t offer anything worth paying for with Sketchup 2013. I NEVER had any difficulties finding the excellent plugins I whished for. Some were free, others I payed for - easy as pie.. But this so called upgrade is pure vaporware and an insult to the users. Curved leaders and hatched patterns in Layout?
For me, this community represents the really knowledgeable users of sketchup and there seem to be no communication with SU developing team? It makes no sence. Now I´m keeping an open eye for something akin to Sketchup but as soon as the term "annual service-fee" pops up - I´m gone.. As I will be as soon as they talk about the "cloud".

well damn. LO2013 has really been improved in the speed department.
pleasantly surprised.first project i'm using 2013 on... and so far, so good.
only gripe and bitchin is that we still don't have components in LO, and that the pick order / UI is drastically different than SU.please, make them the same. i hate mistakenly dragging stuff around my LO screen while I work...
-
Well, I have been using SU for the past 7 years and am now having serious doubts after reading some of these posts whether i should upgrade or not.I use profile Builder and Windowizer 4 daily and consider them both a very important part of my workflow. If these dont work in SU 2013 then why would I even consider upgrading!!! If Trimble are not going to take this programme seriously and listen to users requests then frankly I need to seriously start looking at alternatives.
One I have had my eye on for a while which I seriously looked at a couple of years ago was the Rhino plugin VisualArq. Back when I looked at it it was at best on a par with SU so couldnt really justify the change. I have spent the afternoon looking at VisualArq videos and must say it has come a LONG LONG way since I last looked at it. Best of all it exports to Revit in IFC format retaining all the parametric atributes of the components. One of my pet SU frustrations has always been the amount of work I put into building concept models and not being able to leverage that work by exporting into say Revit for documentation. Smaller projects I have done in LO but larger commercial projects need to be documented in a platform shared by other consultants on the team like Revit. The scheduling in VisualArq looks great as well.
I would be intrested to hear if anyone else has similar feelings or has made the transition from SU to Rhino.
