This is what I'm going to do:

Wait and see if I can skip this release and if I can still upgrade to 2014 for the same 95 bucks.

If not I'll switch over to "Form Z" for good.
SU has no 64 bit support, no true curves, frankly no power under the hood for today's work flow. No real circles and arches; No mapping for textures. Layout is a Joke.

I'm not wasting even 95 bucks for nothing. Nice try Trimble. Unless there is another release under 2013 that will be more convincing. But I won't hold my breath.

      simplicity is the ultimate sophistication

I don't know about the 64 bit argument... I'm not "informed" enough. But Thom says we really have no need of it. And I trust his judgment. The render crowd has different ideas I think.

As for the no real circles you're right there. I liked Autocad's form of using arc and circle smoothness up to 20,000. But I actually use curved walls in my designs and they are actually built out of straight lines turned... So I kind of like the way curves are already. I can set a number of segments and then keep the wall realistic for planning.

Well you're the one arguing that it's worth $1000.00 So I just want to know... It does have spiral stairs although, I can't explain it they just looks strange and simplistic. it does have options for one railing. But it builds all the stairs improperly as far as architectural details go. It seems to be making solids. Frankly, I still don't see anything. the roofing is quite rudimentary, looks to be solids. with not much option for detail, none of the plethora of options I have with Vali Architect Tools. None of the Tons of tools in 1001bit Pro. I see nothing that excites me and especially nothing that makes me want to spend $1000.00 and learn a new program.

So will we see you visit the SU 2014 Wish list to tell us what is missing that is so crucial?

Well, that falls under the heading of "your mileage may vary" -- the tools are there, and of course they are not going to be as comprehensive as a dedicated 3rd party solution. I don't see solids as being a bad thing, but you do... so we will just have to disagree.

As for SketchUp wish lists, I wasted my time with this while I was teaching tutorial videos for SketchUp 7 and 8... I have no more energy or time to waste with Bacus.

I'm here mostly because I have had a presence here for a while and, while I don't like the way the program has developed, I do value the community that sprang up around it. If there is any true asset that SketchUp has that cannot be matched it is that -- however they are endangering that as well now.

              Best,
              Jason.

I create video tutorial series about several 2D & 3D graphics programs.

Other options worth noting are Rhino, MoI3D and Blender...

You're comparing Sketchup to things it was never supposed to be and whatsmore those things cannot build a set of construction documents for a structure. For pure modelers that are only interested in making games, movies or renders and especially organics then those programs are great, for designing, building in 3D and then documenting for construction they can't compete.

rhino is pretty robust natively (moreso than su/layout combined) as far as 2D stuff goes:

combined with a plugin such as VisualArq and you'd be set

I was one of the early private beta testers for V-Ray and I can tell you now that if you use V-Ray, then you will want this new release. There is a nasty bug in SU8 M5 that would cause Bugsplats left and right that was related to SKM materials. Just about 60% of my materials in my libraries would crash SU. This is no longer an issue in this release. That alone, will force me to upgrade but I do agree that this is a very weak release and was quickly bummed out with it. I really miss being able to have toolbars stack in double widths on the sidebar. I have worked this way for 7 years and now I need to get used to this new system with single columns. Ugh.

                          Yes.

When you start SketchUp, you'll see a yellow "reload" icon on the Extension Warehouse toolbar if there are fresh versions. Then your "My Extensions" page will have update buttons for the new ones.

Hopefully, this'll make it much easier for developers to push out improvements.

And thanks to everyone on this thread for your feedback. We are definitely listening. πŸ˜„

I haven't seen any discussion regarding the cost to skip 2013 and upgrade from SketchUp Pro 8 to SketchUp Pro 2014. Will it be $95 or would one have to buy another full $590 license to skip a release cycle?

The upgrade from SketchUp Pro 8 to SketchUp Pro 2013 is $95 plus state tax.

Sorry, but that wasn't my question. I want to know what to expect to pay if I skip 2013 and go directly from 8 to 2014. Would I pay an upgrade fee or whole new license fee?

                              $590.00 US

That is actually not clear, for what I seen at http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/3000020

                              and then later

It’s important to note that your SketchUp Pro license will always work for the version of Pro that you paid for. SketchUp Pro licenses will not stop working when your upgrade, maintenance, and support program expires. For example, if you purchased a new license for SketchUp Pro 2013 on June 1st, 2013, you would get a perpetual Pro 2013 license that would not expire. You would also get upgrades, maintenance, and support until May 31st, 2014 (i.e. one year after the purchase).

To continually get the annual SketchUp Pro upgrades, maintenance, and support, year after year, you will need to renew the program again for $95* per year. Don't worry, we'll let you know when you're nearing the end of your program so that you have time to renew if you choose to do so.

I might be wrong, but I understand that they actually don't state anything about if it's possible to update SU8 later to SU2014/2015/etc as SU 8 and earlier do not have this annual SketchUp Pro upgrades -program that can expire. Confusing - yes.

The work around it to create two custom toolbars. Put half of your icons in one and the other half in the other. Then place them both on the right or left and side by side. It works, but it is really curious to me how someone thought this was an improvement.

Many things are a shared decision. Someone decides for you. You decide not to quit your software/OS/platform or whatever. Especially in software development, it is common not to rebuild everything from scratch (aka. from drivers and toolkits) but do high-level programming using components from others on which you have little influence.

Just downloaded and installed the eval version of Pro.
Then I read this entire thread.

I did notice a lot of talk about large toolbar icons, but no one pointed out that you can turn that feature off...go to the tab.

Also, network licenses are a $150 upgrade. 😐 Not to thrilled about that...will have to see if the boss wants to spend that sort of cash.

Still have clipping of the model view in one of my larger models...was hoping the under the hood work would have fixed that. It is a big issue when trying to zoom in to work on details as well as just getting shots of the model.

Guess I have 7hrs and 30 minutes left to figure out if it is worth the upgrade.

For the "Make" version (thinking home) will .stl be available?...mainly doing 3d printing at the house these days.

i would say it's even cheaper with these $825... if you calculate the whole subscription cost for the update period of Rhino... When did Rhino 4 get released? 2004? 2005? I don't remember... So if it was 2005 this would be $825 for 7 years including 9 service releases! vs $590+6x$95= $1160 for sketchup including 6 Updates!
I think the association Sketchup=cheap 3D is history now...

Maybe i'll update my Rhino 4 license now. I will definitely try out bonzai3D v3 and formz.

                                            STOP IT!!!!!!

Have disagreements but guys don't lower the tone of your arguments!

I can see the point you both have here, both are VERY valid. I'd suggest for now the use of SU / Layout is a little more stacked for Architectural documentation and with Trimble now owning SU (despite this light weight release) they are leaders in the area of construction admin in the field and thus let's see where this heads.

For me I do architecture and for my purpose SU is gold and I don't use any plugins other than maxwell, if I installed a dozen plugins I'm certain life would still be easier.

When I look at plugins like "PlusSpec" I get all tingly!

Although I think that zform may well develop to work with Architecture given the take up by Architects is VERY low and that BIM integration might never be integrated I'm not sure it will be a total replacement.
