Saint Mary - 3D Virtual Model
    by SketchUcation community volunteers

    CONCEPT:
This is a non commercial project for the creation of a 3D SketchUp Model of
Saint Mary Star of the Sea, West Melbourne Australia.
Like "barn raising" in the USA it is proposed that individuals construct assigned
assemblies of St. Mary that will then be assembled into the final version.

Links to the 3D model will be included in the church's website.
    http://www.stmaryswestmelbourne.org

For information on progress on the continuing renovation of St. Mary refer to video at:
    http://www.stmaryswestmelbourne.org/restoration/video-documentary/

Additional information in regards resources and work done to date on the SketchUp model
    are available at DropBox:
    DROPBOX - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/cqer0p46144ksi2/FrFViA_-z6

    CONTACTS FOR THIS EXERCISE ARE:
Ray Facer - Send comments and register interest by PM on SketchUcation or
    e: facer0001@gmail.com m: 0411 46 71 88
    Footnote by Ray Facer:
I should clarify that I am receiving no commercial remuneration from this exercise.
I am not a Christian and have no direct relation with the church. My office is
5 minutes walking distance away. For the past 20 years I have "used" their church
as my private meditation hall. I pick the right times when it is almost empty and hence
perfect for contemplation and I know of no other building as calm and refreshing.
This exercise is my way of giving a little back to the church.

    Coordinator: Fr Joseph PIch e: josephpich@gmail.com m: 0438 94 20 43

    STAGE 1:

    1. Call for registration of interest from the SketchUp community.

    2. Agreed template for SketchUp assemblies in regards naming of
layers and related standardization of model.

    3. Dividing the model into "manageable" assemblies that allow participation of
      numerous participants.
      STAGE 2:

    4. The model is to have two levels of detail, Simple and Complex.

A Complex Model may be undertaken after the completion of a Simple Model.

The simple model is to allow quick construction and implementation of the "concept"
and test the integration of assemblies.

    1. Issue of "Assembly Templates" that will contain the necessary data to allow the fabrication of the SketchUp assemblies.

             1. SketchUp model template
             2. Dimensions of elements
             3. Photos
             4. Notes as required

    STAGE 3:

    1. Creation of the Simple Model
    2. Evaluation of the process and the results.
    3. Improvements and adjustments made and integrated into new templates and
processes for the "Complex" model if interest is there.

Thank you for considering the above concept.
I look foreword to hearing from interested parties and learning more about the power of SketchUp.

    Regards,

    Ray

A few more pictures of the church are attached.
I will work on updating the "dropbox" to contain
more pictures of the exterior and interior.

I think this project might need some photos to show what it entails. Beautiful building.

Is that Irony or Coincidence or both that your ISP is VirginBroadband?

Just Coincidence as far as I am aware. Although one never knows for sure, life is a "mystery".
You will have to blame Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson for the name, clever marketing I think.

The autocad files looks as though this will go much more quickly than I had thought... Hard to resist imported autocad files in sketchup.

                  Hi facer,

I imported the CAD drawing, cleaned up and made faces. That should be the first step.

                    Charly

Good to see you are "keen to go". Before anyone goes any further please wait until I
tidy up the plan a little. Nothing too major but it will reflect the current layout.
I am now in the process of:

                    1. removing confessionals that are not in use
                    2. updating the furniture layout
                    3. adding the new glass entry wall
                    4. setting out a logical grid for reference.

When I complete the first two items above I will update the DropBox SketchUp plan
and also post to the forum.

Charly would it not be better to keep all the plans in one location as the Dropbox.
I can see the advantage of posting to the forum as it gives a "window" into the process.
I think your process is a good one as it enrolls and motivates SketchUcation members to get
                    involved.

I think it best in future that I first receive a copy of the plan or assembly first and
then OK it for issue. This will ensure that everyone is "singing from the same page".

Good work, thank you for your effort.

I'm also not religious but find the architecture of churches very interesting and enlightening... The older the better.

                              Dave,
Some of you are getting ahead the rest of us but I have to agree it is "fun" to see the building rise up. Like the great church builders of the middle ages found a good result takes time.

I have upload extensive photos of the South Elevation Gr Floor level which is my primary focus.
This is the elevation that will be the next phase of the stone restoration work.
Currently the church is raising funds for this stage and I am hoping to use the
SketchUp model to assist in this fund raising endeavor.

(note the estimate of $1500 - $2500 approx (Aust) per sq. metre for straight walling - expensive due to the detail of the work plus factors as scaffolding, hoists etc.)

FOLDER: St. Mary pics - Elevation South Gr Fl
These will be followed with the Top level photos of the windows.

I should clarify that I am receiving no commercial remuneration from this exercise.
I am not a Christian and have no direct relation with the church. My office is
5 minutes walking distance away. For the past 20 years I have "used" their church
as my private meditation hall. I pick the right times when it is almost empty and hence perfect for contemplation and I know of no other building as calm and refreshing.

They have an "enormous task" ahead of them so I thought I would give a little back.
If the SketchUp model can assist their efforts I will be satisfied.
I appreciate the assistance being offered by the SkethUcation community and I am interested to see where this "journey" will lead. I should also confess that I am a Canadian, not an Aussie.

                              Cheers,
                              Ray

The church had full dwg drawings including sections undertaken in the past using
photogrammetrics. As soon as the full set of drawings have been received they will be updated
                                to the DropBox.

Note the dwg elevation drawings are accurate and have precedence over the
drawn plan. The plan was prepared independently of the photogrammetric process by the architects.

St. Mary update 20 June 2015

The external model of St. Mary Star of the Sea has been completed
by the dedication of David Asher of Windsor Ontario, Canada.

A SketchFab "entry Section" can be viewed at:

The materials and white lines are not what we want but at present I am
not sure of how to improve of the original SketchUp model

We are currently working on preparing "audio clips" that can be integrated into
the St. Mary 3d Virtual Model shown in SketchFab. This has been aided by the
generous donation of a Nagra-Pico by Nagra.

Our marketing stragegy for generating donations for the Restoration works at St. Mary Star of the Sea are:

                                        a. Complete a good 3d model on SketchFab that will lend itself to VR (virtual reality) cardboard viewers.

                                        b. Have a liminted number of "audio clips" (eg. Entry doors, Stained glass on Entry Elevation,
and North Elevation - the renovated elevations that have street views.)

                                        c. Have some test "coffee chats" at Josies on Wednesday (good backroom) or in
in the Crypt under St. Mary. These sessions would demonstrate the use
SketchUp on a laptop and SketchFab VR on an i-phone.

                                        d. Once the "bugs" have been ironed out and delivery is "smooth"
we hope to get local newspaper and radio spots to discuss the project.

Thank you everyone to date for your comments and suggestions.
