[Plugin] Simple Plugin Installer
-
I keep getting the message windows cannot open this file. When I try to have it select from a list of programs, it takes me to a bunch of PC cleaner sites. Any further direction?
-
Hi Katie,
You do not need to open or run these rb files (but if you are interested, open them with notepad as they are simple text files).
Simply copy the file into your plugins folder:
C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 8\Plugins
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Google SketchUp 8\Plugins
on a 64 bit Windows, restart SketchUp and you are done. Some more complex plugins consist of several files so they are usually distributed zipped in an archive. See this topic how to deal with them:

Changed the download to be a RBZ file only - and with screenshot description of how to install from within SketchUp.

Thanks man!

Version 1.1.0
Added guard against VirtualStore under Windows. -
Hi Thomas,
I am brand new to SketchUp, so forgive me for having no idea what I am doing! I have been reading through the forums with all the amazing plugins available, so I am anxious to get started. First plugin in I want to load is this one for sure. I followed your step by step install instructions, easy enough, but SketchUp is not accepting the plugin. It says:"SketchUp was unable to install the Extension you have chosen for some unknown reason.
Consult your Extension's documentation for additional help."
I am using Mac SketchUp Pro 8. Any ideas? Am I missing something?
Thanks!

@Chris
Do you have full read/write permissions to your 'plugins' folder?
If not you will need to fix them.
Here’s how I believe you modify permissions on MAC OSX, using the 'Info' window...
[I'm on a PC !]- While using an 'administrator account'...
- Click the folder's icon to select it.
- From the 'File' menu, select 'Get Info'.
- A dialog appears.
- Click the 'disclosure triangle' next to 'Sharing & Permissions' to display permissions for the selected folder.
- Click the 'lock' and 'authenticate' buttons as needed.
- Use the menus next to 'users and groups' to change the permissions to 'read+write' for you [and * everyone else depending on your setup].
- Use the 'cog' button to apply the changes to all contained files and subfolders/files as well...
- When you’re finished, close the 'Info' window.
- The changes are now current.
On a MAC the correct folder path should be:
macintosh HD//Library/Application Support/Google SketchUp 8/SketchUp/plugins
Note this is NOT the similar 'user' one... -
Thank you TIG for a prompt response. I will try this today and it sounds like it should work.
While I have your attention, looking through your posts about the plugin you created for work planes, I don't see the actual download for version 2.3 or any previous version? Are the actual plugins you create in a different part of the forum/ site? Hen I clock on the corresponding link to the updated version, it just goes back to the same thread.
Tks

Most plugins have their download link in their thread's first post, usually it's at the end of that post.
'WorkPlane
' is no exception.
See http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=274345#p274345
Look at the end of that post and there's the archiveWorkPlane23.zip
to download and install... It's been successfully downloaded 3,088 times !
A ZIP archive set of files etc is easily installed using the appropriate 'Simple Installer' option... -
Awesome. Thanks again TIG! I'll make sure to look for the .zip file.

What version of SketchUp do you have installed? Do you have the latest maintainense release - released last week? It mentioned it fixed from faulty permission issues.
-
Thanks very much for the update. I found the original version worked very well.

Hey guys,
For some reason, the "Install Extension" option is not available to me.

Please, make sure you update your SU installation to the latest build. This was introduced during one of the SU 8 maintenance releases. You apparently have an older version.
-
I believe the option was introduced with the second maintenance release. There have been three more since.
Didn't you get at least one notification that there is a new version of SU8?
-
It was added in M2 - hence the requirement listing SU8M2.
Firewalls might block the update notifications. Our office does this. All though, when the firewall was more relaxed, I noticed that most uses just clicked away the notification. Messagebox-blindness.
-
Thank you guys. Apparently my "check for updates" option in preferences was unchecked.
And till now i have been using sketchup without ever facing issues so never realized updates have come.
Thank you ThomThom, I finally managed to get your shell plugin working, it's been really useful.
I'm glad to have joined this community, has already helped me a lot with my modelling work.
Looking forward to give some input from my side tooOn a side note, I'm experiencing issues with sketchup becoming a little slower, i mean its lagging a little after the update, any input on this guys?

Could be that you have run into issues with messed up toolbar registry items. Are you comfortable navigating the registry?
-
Actually, I have no idea how to edit anything regarding the registry. But then I'm a fast learner.
Anyways the issue seems to have gone now after i restarted my laptop.
-
sorry mate.
