Plugin Idea: Image Link to URL
-
dear thomthom, tig, dale and other plugin gurus..
After attending the conference for 21st century classrooms, I never realize the potential of sketchup in education. With this it gave me an idea on how to further explore the possibility of Sketchup with education.
I hope you can develop a pluggin where there is possibility to embed a clickable URL on a texture or component. When you hover the mouse to a material, texture or component, you have an option to go to a link of website..
Say for example I created a material (painting of Monalisa) then embed a url there, you hover the mouse for example on an image and then you have the option to go to a pre-defined URL by the user. This is useful when a student want to know more info about the painting, then you can go to the URL link related with Monalisa.
-
Another example. Say I will create a student musuem in Language arts. Then I will place some historical models in the in the SketchUp scene. When the student click the material or maybe the whole component. then an embedded Link is there. You can find more information about this material or component.

Morisdov has 2 plugins that allow linking. Not like you want but worth investigating.
One links to YouTube and the other requires some HTML editing

ok, i saw morisdov pluggin and i think it will be develop further. I hope it will be reversed. instead of pointing onto the links with the open dialogue box with Html, it will be from texture in sketchup linking to a link in the website where you can find info on this particular model, component or image (like painting, a place etc.)

I'm almost positive a plugin exists that makes it so you can click on an object and have it pop open a webpage assigned to that object. Maybe made by TBD years ago? If we can't find it, it wouldn't be that hard to do.

Ahh, it was Didier:

Maybe that's what you're looking for?

This plugin idea will certainly be a great tool to have and I am sure many people will find creative uses for it. Chris fullmer the ruby named “link” will be improved if one didn’t have to only right click the object and choose “Get Url”. Instead it will be better if it had an option for it to automatically go to the url when you simply left click the object. The reason being is that you want to tell people a one-step instruction and not more than that because they might get lost, assuming this 3D model is in public display. Anyways thanks for the link because this can be very handy for me.

oh yes!!!! this is it.. thanks you chris and of course didier for the plugin. -
For the left-click to work you need to have a Tool running, then when you left-click on any object it can decide what action to take from opening a wed-page, display a dialog, change it to be red, or anything you can devise...
You can also set all sorts of actions for 'modifier keys' - like TAB press to open a dialog or Ctrl+click to open your Help etc. -
Looked for a plugin like this some time back but didn't find. This is really handy for me doing mechanical stuff - I can go straight to steel / brg. / cylinder / etc. mfg.'s or any reference material right from the drawing for instance. Using it to refer to other models or sub-assy. or whatever from my files. Thank you 8 yrs belatedly Didier and Chris Fullmer for the info. An oldie but a goodie. Only thing I have found is it won't open an avi file or an mp3 file - SU just ignores - not a large problem, who needs an mp3 really - just an observation.

one thing i just request is i hope that it has abit of indication that it display that a paricular link or file is embedded in the component.
