looks nice πŸ˜„ so the grass is only a rectangle with an alpha texture and copied all over the place?

                        I'm using SketchUp 2017, V-Ray 3.4

Where can I learn the work flow involved in the instancing? Is that one 3D plant" Are any of the parameters of the plant randomized in each instance? Is the placement of the plants done on SU or in Thea?

No it's 3d. Haven't modeled it myself though.

In Thea of course, all that 3d vegetation would easily kill SU.

Actually it is quite simple: it's almost like Kerkythea but of course more powerful. You have to input a canvas (a portion of the terrain defined by a material) and an instance (the model of the grass or of a tree) and then you can use a "populate" command or a "brush" tool. Each tool is customizable.

I've used four different instances for the grass and two for the trees. Anyway you can assign to each package of instance+canvas (and that will affect randomly each generated instance) parameters such as Direction, Normal, Roll, Scale (percentages), Minimum distance (meters) etc.

Am I correct that THEA runs as a SU plugin and as a plugin costs about $60?

No, Thea is a standalone studio renderer that sells for € 295 (application + two nodes) and the exporter plugins are sold separately - the SU plugin for € 39.5 (that would be around $ 52-53) plus tax where applicable.

See the whole pricing table here (for me at least, prices appear in €):

Dear unpronounceable, to me, the sky looks very realistic. My impression is the bottom of a storm cloud overhead with the sun hitting the building in the last moment of sunset.

Yeah, Roger is right. The sky is a spherical HDR photo of a sunset sky used as background+lighting. You can find it here. Here is a miniature.πŸ˜‰
