Why is it that there seems to be almost no car modelers posting their work here? Seems like everyone is modeling houses, or furniture, or anything other than car models. I realize that SU was intended for architecture, and that car models have very few flat or planar surfaces, but hey, I'm getting lonely! 😒

Difficulty in making smooth, compound curved surfaces with an evenly spaced grid. I've had an AT-6 on the drawing board, and a BD5 and getting the wings, fuselage and other compound shapes right has put the projects at a standstill. I even have a 30s-ish car concept I'd like to make.

Maybe the difficulty of shapes like this puts people off?

          That's my excuse.

Not gonna claim it's easy, those complex curved surfaces still drive me nuts. But the results can be very rewarding, and like anything it does get easier with experience. Hey, you could start out with Model T's, they have very few curves πŸ˜„

It gets frustrating sometimes not to be able to compare notes with other car modelers. Heck, nowadays I get excited when I see someone post an airplane, or a tank. Anything with wheels of some sort. When I post a model it feels like it's out there in a ghost town, with tumbleweeds piling up against it.

Anybody feel sorry for me yet?

Well, yes, if you only need one for entourage in another model. I'm talking about the people that model cars just because they like modeling cars. Are we a dying breed? Or were there just never that many to begin with?

Don't feel like that. People appreciate your models. I have never been all that interested in the cars I see here, but you and that Idaho guy changed my outlook. Maybe there are more car people in the other modeling applications that have more organic features.

I think professionally there's just more work to do in industrial and architectural design fields. You only do cars professionally if you work for a relatively small group of companies. I think we actually have one of those here. Who was that?

Well, that's ok. I don't really want anyone to post any models that are better than mine πŸ˜‰ .

Solo, you're the exception. Your models are in a whole galaxie apart from us regular modelers. The level of your work is completely unobtainable by people like me, so I don't feel threatened by them. Ok, sometimes I do bang my head against the wall, but I'm into pain so that's no problem.

In other words, I wanna see your Ariel Atom and new Zonda models. I just patched my wall so I'm ready.

For me, it is most definitely a time issue. I would love to have time to tinker with car models, but between young children and my business in arch-vis, there is just absolutely no spare time for "fun" (or as you mention - self-inflicted pain)

I have several cars at a certain stage but it is such a tear your hair out process I get to the point of just giving up most of the time. The inconsistent responses of various plug-ins do not help, that and the memory issues of a 32 bit program.

Tanks are a bit easier for the most part but subjects like the Chieftain and others with compound curves are much as cars.

There is ely862me and there used to be RayOchoa. Haven't seen him lately. Ogan Ocali has posted cars. scottpara did a nice little series of "CARicatures", I think, with modified proportions.

I'd love to have a go at modelling vehicles at some point, but I do find it a bit of a daunting challenge. There's also a good chance that I'll end up spending way too much time on small details.
