Mac and PC files compatible?
-
I am working with a client who is a Windows user and I on the other hand use Mac.... when emailing skp files to him he can't open them. Any ideas why this could be happening? The operation in reverse works fine as I can open his with no problem.
Another note is that he is using the free version and viewer and I am using the pro version.

I can open the file with no problem (SU 8 Pro).
There should not be any problem whether it's Mac or Windows or Free or Pro. The only issue may be that you have SU 8 and he uses the viewer for SU 7 or earlier.
Sometimes images that work on the Mac and colour coded in CYMK do not work on the Windows version (it should therefore always be RGB) but here this cannot be the problem.

As Gaieus says... check that you both have the same versions of Sketchup installed .
You can always save a SKP as an earlier version [use save_as > dropdown list], at least until the client catches up to have v8M2 too... -
Thanks very much for the quick response! I had him check for updates and grab the latest version and he still seems to be having problems. When trying to open .skp file he gets an "unexpected file format" message. Any thoughts?

How are you exchanging the files ?
As ZIP files etc ?
Does he have .SKP files 'associated' with Sketchup ? -

Excellent question. The other day I had an e-mail from a guy who was trying to open a SketchUp file i had sent him. Photoshop kept opening instead. Finally got it straightened out but it was strange.

I had my client download the skp file and import it in to an already open file and he got this..."An attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end" is this related to what has been mentioned with .skp being related to Sketchup? As far as file exchange, I have just been emailing the file as an attachment...should I try as a zipped file?
Thanks again for all the help thus far... and thank-you in advance for any on new advice/suggestions! I had emailed Sketchup Pro support and heard nothing....hmmm

Well, I have downloaded and installed the viewer now. I can open your file with it without any problem. This is a 32 bit XP Home with Service Pack 3 here.

I also have no difficulties with opening your SKP on my Windows Vista PC.
It sounds like there's something adrift with your client's set up / OS
How is he 'downloading' the SKP?
Have you tried a ZIP version he extracts when it's on his PC... to see if that helps...
Incidentally... you could reduce the SKP's size considerably if you were to purge the unused things [particularly component definitions] with Model Info > Statistics... before zipping or otherwise attaching it to a post or an email... -
One ather thing: are you sure you are sending the skp file, not the backup (skb) file?
-
if the file extension '.SKP' is used/kept, a SU f. Windows user should not have any problems with file associations especially after a fresh SU installation.
could imagine that your mail client is doing some encoding to the SKP file, just ZIP it for avoiding this... or simply add a '.bin' to the file name (= "xyz.skp.bin") and tell your partner to remove it.
