Abobe Illustrator files to Sketchup problem
-
Hi Everybody.
It's a great App isn't it? but can you help me please...I have an Adobe Illustrator file, which I can convert to Paths and export to DWG and then into Sketchup. It appears seamlessly in Sketchup but I can't Push/Pull it or extrude in any way - what am I doing wrong and should I take another route? Any ideas most welcome.

You need faces to use Push/Pull. You don't have faces in the DWG file; only edges. There are several ways to make faces including the Make Faces plugin (I'll find the link) or by tracing over edges with the line tool.

/ Ah Many thanks and so quickly too, I'll try to find that Plug in as well. Ta ra! -
Here you go. http://www.smustard.com/script/MakeFaces Read about the script and pay attention to item number 5. You'll need this plugin, too: http://www.smustard.com/script/ProgressBar

Hi All and Dave R. Make faces worked well until I got to one letter in the 3D logo which would not create a face. The error message from Make Faces said "you must select at least three faces to make Make Faces work, what am I doing wrong?

Hi Dave R. Ok I now have Make faces but it only works with some of the letters in the 3D logo I'm making, it comes back with "you must select at least three faces" so what am I doing wrong?

If you aren't getting faces, there are probably gaps in the edges. Why not post the SKP file so we can see exactly what you've got?

If you imported the CAD file at an inappropriate units-setting then it might have missed some tiny bits of edges out [use the Options button on the importer-dialog to change the units]... Sketchup can't cope with very small things [<~1mm/0.01sq"] - which then means faces can't form as the 'loop' is broken.
Try importing it as 'mm' - you can always rescale the logo later...
Of course it there were gaps in the original AI/CAD lines they won't face anyway and you will need to Move vertices or add in new bits of Lines to close them and get Faces... -
Thanks everybody, a few hours of investigation found stray lines which was spotted with Smustard Stray Lines Plug in. As you say TIG it was a tiny unfinished loop which was wrong, I removed them, closed the loop and bam! Many thanks to you all, I can see this forum is going to be useful, but I'll try not to ask too many dumb ass questions! I'm OK with Final Cut Pro,Cinema 4D, Motion etc, but have just bought Sketchup and I'm really enjoying doing some engineering models on it. Thanks Again.
