My personal understanding of photo realistic renders are what Thea, Twilight, Kerkythea, Vray, Fryrender, Indigo, Maxwell and a few other render applications are capable of making...
But that's perhaps just my personal preference...!?LightUp sure can make some great renders, but there's so many other render applications in the list I posted, which can do the same...

my favorite for biased render is Vray, Unbiased is Thea. Quck Lighting study is Light up. In the end you should be the one trying them. Its like going to shopping center with ideas but in the end its the one that fits you that matters.

Oh, and by my earlier recommendations of Octaine, you have to be aware that you need a Cuda-complient graphic card.
And a pretty descent one tooChoosing render engine unwisely might force you into getting new hardware as well

I think Pilou mentioned Blender-Cycles. They have a ripoff Octaine in there now you can try

I don't create too many renderings, so take my opinion with a grain of salt, but for exterior renderings I prefer Vue, as it creates an endless variety of plants from a single instance.

I should add to this now that Maxwell Free is a good start. Then if you like it, fork over the $95 for the higher resolution output. I am a Kerkythea user turned Vray user and I am taking a serious look at Maxwell now.

I want to talk about I own, and I have played; I have Vue, Thea, Octane, Lightup, Lumen RT, Maxwell for sketchup, Podium I & II, and IRenderNxt.
Vue very good for exteriors.
Thea Incredible versatility an great price for all the features.
Octane very fast, and great results, but you must take care about the number of textures on your scene, great price.
Lightup, very good and stable, and very good price for all you can do, easy to learn, you can play the files any where.Its being upgrading very often.
LumenRT, I rendered a model I downloaded from google warehouse, I did no settings, and the results were great. Great price. You need to have a good video card to play the files.
Maxwellgives very good results, but still a little slow, but great price.
Podium good and stable, and still a little slow.
IRender Nxt Stable good results, I don't know what to say about price, this was my first render engine, I still like it, but I haven't upgraded yet.What I Use most?
Vue for exteriors,
Thea for every thing, exteriors and interiors
Octane for every thing, but must be small scene
Lightup, it's nice to have something to give to my clients,so they can play or interact with it.I think the use of each render engine depends on the project, the client, and the time you have.
