Sketchup + Missing Link + Mixamo = Rigged Characters
-
Ok if you havent heard of Mixamo i suggest you check it out, its a stand alone program on the net, no download needed where you upload your character and Mixamo generates a rigged body and your character becomes animated automaticly within minutes, fantastic right... wrong, it supports many 3D programs but not sketchup, heres the link http://www.mixamo.com/
I taught i would look into this software futher and try and find away, this is how it is, Sketchup exports file in .dae format which are not reconised by Mixamo, Mixamo only reconises these file formats FBX BVH OBJ, Now i do believe sketchup pro can export FBX and OBJ, so i searched the web and found a "dae to fbx converter" freeware from autodesk, and so i converted the file, now i tried loading my file to Mixamo but failed, why??? i dont know, because my FBX converted file was reconised by unity and opened the file just as it was in sketchup before i converted it,
Has anyone of you managed to get an SU model imported into Mixamo with the use of other programs, or can anyone help me out with why Mixamo isnt loading my converted FBX file

Tig has a free OBJ exporter which you will find here http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=33448
I made a block figure in SU, exported using tigs tool, uploaded, created and animated the character easily, but I'm not planning to pay to download it.

Damien,
I think I mentioned this on the forums some time past and Alan Frazer had some interesting and useful comments.
Neat app thoughMike

Thanks for the heads-up.
Have you tried .obj?
ThereĀ“s a free online conversion service: https://www.babel3d.com/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2f -
Nice one Mike, do you have a link to that forum by any chance.... ???

Can you please give a tutorial as to how you did this, i have exported my model to OBJ format, i upload the file into Mixamo and it loads successfully but when i get to the rigging stage all im getting is a black screen, any ideas as to where im going wrong????? -
Sorry, I really have no idea, I tried it out of curiosity and it worked first time, simply clicking the buttons that it told me to click.
Perhaps your model is too complex or you internet connection speed is slow, it did take some time for it to load for me. As you cam see from my screen shot it was an incredibly basic model. Also, make sure it does what you really want before spending too much time with it, I downloaded one of their free models and when brought into SU it is nothing more than a static figure, I was unable to manipulate it in any sort of rigging manner.
I have also received 5 emails from their support service asking me if I had any problems and if so to email them at support@mixamo.com
Perhaps they can help.I will go back and have a look if I can see anything that might help, but if I don't post back in 10 minutes or so I don't believe I can add any more to help.

Ok after a little reserch i found this,
http://digson.blogspot.com/2011/05/mixamo.html
So it is possible to animate your models in Mixamo, unfortunately you cant import your animation back into sketchup but you can mport your rigged animation into other programs for example Unity and so on, now i have failed to get a model working in Mixamo but as seen in the video on link its an fbx file he is using and not a obj file which i have being, if only there was a fbx converter plugin for sketchup models without having to buy the pro edition

I suggest you have a look at Daz 3D, it might be all you need and DAZ Studio 4 is completely free at the moment.
-
Just a quick question, can i import my character model from sketchup to Daz 3D,?? cheers for the heads up, downloading Daz now, take it once its free
-
lol, no need to answer my last, i did it without any hassel
-
I rigged my character in sketchup last nite and taught id test it out with some eyframe animation
here it is http://youtu.be/dAwq_yhL9HI -
I commend your persistence in trying this out in SketchUp but I fear your using carrot to drive a nail.
You know you can export to Blender from SketchUp. Then you can rig in Blender as well as render.
But, so far you're doing a good job.
-
lol im too stubern to give up, but thank you, i did look into blender and other simuliar programs out there but the taught of learning these programs take too much time, im more used to sketchup and i strongly believe it can be done in sketchup, most of my tests so far have worked really well, im out to prove it, ha ha
