        1. Purge the model of unused elements ( Window -> Model Info -> Statistic -> Purge Unused )
        2. Reduce the size of your textures ( This is usually the biggest cause of a model's filesize ) (Also check background images (watermarks etc)
        3. If you have identical objects repeated in a model, use components instead of groups
        4. Don't add more details than you need. Don't loose focus on your scale, what distance the model will be viewed from.
        5. Run CleanUp http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=22920

Be careful of where your components come from. Anything modeled in MAX and brought in will kill your file. 3DS into SU will increase your file size 10 fold.

For me the most dramatic file size reduction comes from breaking down components into their smallest parts. Here's an example from another post

It does take a fair amount of work, but gets easier with experience. Whether or not it's worth the effort I guess depends on how serious you are about getting smaller file sizes.

Here's another way to clean up your model.

Here's a bathroom I did with components from the Warehouse. Everything looks good right?

But, if we look closer with hidden geometry turned on, we'll see that these curves are far too detailed.

This combined with having group or component copies can quickly make your model very heavy.

what's the name of the plugin that analyzes your model for heavy components?

                      Found it... Goldilocks.

couldn't find it in the pluginstore.
