There are third party tools that have alternative selection methods...
However, the select-tool's functionality is built-in to Sketchup and not customizable.
Why do you need to stop a right-left fence selection working that way?
It's one of the most useful aspects of the select-tool methods - allowing you to select 'all if crossing' or 'all if within'...
You could invent your own selection-tool that mimicked only some versions of the select-tool's methods... BUT you can't ever disable the select-tool directly when in normal Sketchup, and your new tool would almost inevitably be 'clunky' when compared to the native one...
      Why this idea?

Thank you mitcorb, I will try that!

And TIG, I agree, that the right-left fence selection is really usefull...that's why I want only this (I have again a problem with left and right 😳 )
So, what I need, is to select all groups, or entities that are in my selection, even if there is only part of it in there.

I need this because we want to cut out part of our model.
        This works already.
But it is important to have all the groups that are in the marking and also not to have seperated lines somewhere.

And as most people instinctively use the left-right selection it would be wonderful to have that working like the right-left selection!
        (I hope I got left/right right now 😉 )

So, I will have a look at the tools mitcorb mentioned and hope they work for me.

Thank you, again, for your fast answers!

Remember that making a selection is NOT necessarily a one step process.
You can orbit/pan with the selection intact.
If you find you have selected something you didn't want hold the shift and ctrl keys and re-pick it to remove it from the selection.
If you find there is something you want to add to the selection hold the ctrl key and re-pick it to add it to the selection - if you also re-pick something that's already selected [e.g. by fence] then it's unaffected and stays selected anyway.
The third option is using the shift key alone - this 'toggles' objects, adding to or removing them from the selection...

For what it's worth, and not the first time mentioned by others, how about selection by polygonal fence or lasso fence?
TIG has deftly described what you should also consider.

Yes, I know, that it is not necessarily a one step process but I really want/need it to be a one step process!

So, I think with the help of the plugins you mentioned above, maybe I'll be able to write a plugin that does what I need.
And I have another idea, maybe you can also help me with this.
When manually selecting something you can, by right clicking choose selection (or something similar, as I am german, and using the german version I am not 100% sure about the terms) and add all connected or all bordering edges or all connected faces.
Is there a way to automate these?

              @mitcorb:
What is a selection by polygolnal fende or lasso fence?

Thank you both, again for your help!

                Hi, leni4888:
In response to your last question, the polygonal fence and lasso fence would be two types of selection "boxes" in lieu of the rectangular types that Sketchup selection tool uses. I think many image processing applications, such as Photoshop, Gimp, maybe Inkscape, have at least the lasso or curvy loop selection fence. Some CAD programs may also have these more sophisticated? selection methods.

TT's Vertex Edit plugin has all sorts of selection "shapes". The freehand select works somewhat like a lasso selection tool. An extremely cool feature is that it does not select back faces so when you are working on a "solid" shape for instance (and the faces are oriented correctly), when selecting, nothing is selected "behind".

Tgi3D Select tool is one of the most robust tools out there. It doesn't do fencing but it allows boundary type selection. Check out their video on selecting to see what I mean.

It was just an example (and to show that it is doable in ruby) as not everyone has that (commercial) plugin although it is extremely cool, indeed.
