Best Practices - Topology
-
If you are interested in best practices regarding geometry topology I recommend you pick up a copy of 3D World issue 143 - page 44-49.
Unfortunately it doesn't relate directly to SketchUp as SketchUp doesn't allow for quads as other software does. But the theory of it is still relevant and interesting.
An interesting plugin toolset for SketchUp would be one that ease the handling for the geometry into quads. Quads are always triangulated in all software - so one could add an abstract layer in SU that will simulate the behaviour you get in other 3d packages that natively handle quads.

Not sure about a plugin that deals with quads in sketchup, but there is a plugin that triangulates everything for you.

can anyone tell that Thom is still quite upset about SU not having Quads?

I was looking at how it worked in 3DSMax - and it's not really that different from SketchUp. It does triangulate quads, like SU does. You can even select the dividing edge. It's just that 3DSMax has tools to treat two triangles as a single unit - quad.
So I'm putting together a little suite that does just that. However, it requires that a "quad" is either a face with four vertices, or two triangles joined by a soft edge bordered by non-soft edges.

oh you tease...

Looks like there could be some nice grow/shrink selection tools there?
And Select loops etc maybe? -
I'd like to see that in action
