Can I have more than one SU?
-
There is an undocumented command-line option to select a template at start-up, so you could create a couple .bat files to launch SU using different templates.
Something like this:
C:\Path\to\Sketchup.exe -template "C:\path\to\template.skp"
I rekon a windows short-cut could do the same.

You can open 2 instances of SU. Both with your default template. In the second instance choose...
Help > Welcome to SketchUp > Choose Template
Now press Ctrl+N for New file and your chosen template will load without having to restart SU.

[i'll preface this with a note that i use macs so i don't have to worry about this weirdness but... ]
open the template that you don't use too much.. 'save as' (whatever you want to call it) and put it where you keep your sketchup projects (or somewhere easy to get to)..
have your default template set to the woodworking one (or whatever you mostly use).. if you need to use the other template, just open the .skp which has the other settings. (but don't overwrite it when saving.. do a 'save as' (some other name)
[edit -- actually, on mac, you'd have to do something similar to what rich is saying except you wouldn't have to open a 2nd instance of sketchup (well, you can't launch a 2nd instance.. just multiple windows).. the thing is, you'd have to switch the preference back to your normal template prior to closing or all new windows will open with the not_too_common template]

Thanks Jeff I forget to mention that when you do this method your next instance or opening will be the last template you chose.

Thinking out it, I think yours, Jeff, is the easiest one. I use a similar system with Paint.Net to open different sized templates to start off with. Don`t know why I never thought of it before. And with Win7 you can pin the various different ones to the jump list for easy access.
Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated.

While we're on the subject, let me ask about something that's been annoying me for some time.
I use SketchUp version 7. I have version 8 installed but do not use it. I downloaded it so I could open attachments, tutorials, etc. that were for version 8. But when I open these attachments, it still tells me I need to have the latest version of SketchUp installed. Is there some way to automatically open these in version 8?

But doesn't SU8 open when you open an v8 file from explorer?
-
File -> Save As...if you click the dropdown menu under the filename, you have the option of saving as SU7 thru SU3
-
Which ever SU version you open last, becomes the default.

It is also possible to make a plugin to switch templates quickly. I made one a long time ago for SU6 before similar features were included by Google.

It might still work in version 8, but I need to check.
