Vray + Displacement = Damn slow

hopefully you can help me because i
m getting a bit "angry" about rendering with Vray and displacement maps. First of all i
m a total newbie with rendering so when you explain something to me please make it as simple as possible. (Think of me as a 4 year old child)I played a little bit with modeling and rendering in Sketchup and ended up with some sort of living room scene. With the help of google i found a simple looking tutorial about making a carpet with a bump/displacement map looking like a carpet with a "fury" surface.
Found it quit nice and started to use the bump/displacement feature quit inflationary. By means i used it for the couch and the picture to. To get a leather and a oil painting look. Just wanted to render it now, but the rendering is damn slow. For 2 hours i just saw a black picture and then it slowly got visible.
The only thing i changed in the render settings was the displacement settings (=the way it was described in the tutorial) everything else is still standard.
So my question is now, is there a way to make the rendering faster or a modeling trick to get the same effect just with a real model or maybe a plugin that adds the details to the model with the help of the bump/displacement map, because i would like to play with the modeling an rendering tools and se sort of a fast outcome and don`t have to wait 6 hours for the finished picture.(Hopefully i described it understandable)

Yes, displacement is something one should use sparsley as it is very slow. Though you might be able to adjust your settings and get acceptable result with smaller render times. But that will depend from model to model.
