I'm brand new to this...

Hi, I'm Euterpe from South Africa, and very recentcly got interested in Google Sketchup. I would like to use this program for landscaping design, and was wondering how on earth to create a 3D trees and shrubs? I've searched numerous times for tutorials, but could only find one for the trunks. I was wondering how to create the leaves, and some nice curved leaves as well for shrubs.
I know there are free ones available, but I would like to try my hand at creating it from scratch!
Any help/tips would be appreciated!

Hi,
Welcome to SCF!
Even though SketchUp can create these types of models, it will struggle with performance when handling a number of these trees. We have a member who creates 2.5D trees, tomsdesk, and you'll find examples in the Component, Materials and Styles forum.
In fact, there are quite a few plant-type models there worth checking. It's in these models that you'll gain the most knowledge by reverse engineering.
Here's where Tom sells his models

And lately he supplied us with some samples of his latest collection

Thanks!
Wow, those threes look wonderful! So in other words there isn't any tutorials available, I'll just have to "reverse" myself through those trees in order to figure out how to create them?

I wouldn't say there are no tutorials, but I would suggest understanding components, 2D FaceMe components etc is important. If you dissect Tom's trees, especially the leaves you can see the effort that goes into it!
But there is also tree[d], a free app that generates trees at random!

Great!Thank you very much!

You're welcome! I'll PM you the invoice for my services

Umm...I really hope you are joking...right?

Right.
(Just you now, this is Irish "humour")

Hold on a minute!
I'm deadly serious. I'm sick of people placing a saddle on my back and riding me around this place. From now on I'm charging, even for the insults I throw at you, they'll cost too!
In fact, this reply has now cost ye both! Have you not seen that Ireland is under control of the IMF? Don't you realise my fleet of Bentleys will not get a valet today?
I'm off to climb a tree! Smell ya later...

Euterpe,
Take a look at this thread in the plug-ins forum:
http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=8906
Go down about four posts to the discussion of the "tree factory" plug-in by Richard Jeffrey. This may be something you could play with since it is a manual program. If you get really good at it, you might be able to create a more automatic version and sell it back to us to offset Rich's and my service invoices

Thanks Jim, I've checked it out, but can't seem to find a link to download the file. Is it a free plugin? Do you perhaps have a direct link for me? Thanks!
rclub24 - oh no!!Not your Bentleys! I completely understand, send that invoice over, and I'll make sure you are paid for your services asap!

Rich, will clean your white Bentley for food!
-
Or for beer.
-
Looks who's talking?
Yes I partake in a few sociables when neccessary but never over indulge. Not my style. Actually since Boulder not a drop of beer has touched my lips.
It's all intravenously fed now. This allows me to avail of both hands to monitor this place. And right now my hand is hovering over the ban button.
Anyway this guy wanted help to make trees, not to hear the terrible twins boring diatribe.
Sorry Euterpe, you can ignore these guys! Now where is that money?
-
You don't need money, Rich. You're already Rich.
-
Hey, you owe me dinner
