Jeff, I put the text in a text box in LayOut as I expect HMT was doing. then I exported a PDF file as I always do. How else would you put text into a LayOut project?

There are no options in LayOut for doing anything to text when exporting.

Perhaps there's something weird with the font but it did at least appear in the PDF.

i'm just wondering if pdfs work like certain other documents.

if you send me a .doc typed with calibri and i don't have calibri on my system then the font will be converted to helvetica.

maybe something similar happens in pdfs but the country font doesn't properly translate into a more standard font so it's not showing up in hump's particular pdf viewer

(grasping at straws here 😄 )

hump, how about uploading a sample pdf showing the problem to see if other people can read it or if the text is blank for us as well.

and, you might as well share the sample .layout file in the state it's in just prior to trying an export.

Jeff, one of the reasons for using a PDF file as opposed to something like .DOC is that it doesn't matter if the font is on the viewer's computer or not. It still should show and it should be formatted correctly. Sort of a "What I see is what you get."

Your suggestion for Hump is good.

I tried this as well and it worked for me. There's nothing tricky about that font (licensing, etc...) that I'm aware of. What's your PDF renderer? Same platform, or are you trying to open it on a Mac that doesn't have that font?

Barry, does Mac require that a font be installed to get it to display in a PDF? That's not the case on the PC. Today at work I opened the PDF file I made last night on my home machine and the text displays correctly. I don't have that font loaded on this machine.

I see what you got. I installed the font on my computer and made an export with your LO file. I've attached the resulting PDF.

                  Curious.

BTW, do you work for Kreg?

Yes I use the Kreg tools alot, I happen to love them but I'm not understanding what I need to do to get the text to work on my computer.

I don't know why the font isn't showing up in your PDF file. It did for me. All I did is install the font into the Windows directory where all the other fonts are. Then I opened your LO file and exported a PDF. I didn't do anything special. I don't know but I wonder if it could have anything to do with Vista. Administrative rights for installing fonts or something?

I noticed all those pocket screws in the top. You do know that, if your boards are jointed straight (or better, with a slight spring), you shouldn't need any hardware to join those boards together.

Yeah I'm pretty new to the pocket hole deal but I love them new to woodworking in general, how would you suggest joining the table top boards together? I just seen on the Kreg web site the guy doing it like that with a coffee table, I guess you could use glue? I didn't realize you could see the drawing when I posted the layout file either, please don't laugh at me to much. About the text, I think I'm giving up on it cause it's not that big of a deal. I downloaded country blueprint and placed it in my windows font file which it said it already had but still got the same results. So I'm not sure what else to do?

Maybe another font would be a better choice in this case. Have you tried downloading and installing some other font to see what happens in LO? Might be worth a shot. I wonder if you download and install another font and then change the text to that new font, do you get the same results? Evidently when you use a font that was native to Windows, the text comes through just fine.

As to the top of your table, I would just glue the boards together. There's no need for any mechanical fasteners at all since they are long grain joints. The glue joint will be stronger than the surrounding wood.

And, as to your SketchUp model, I won't laugh at you. There are more efficient ways to draw something like that and I could see things you could do differently but you didn't ask about that. I could see your joinery by double clicking on the view to open the SU model. Then I orbited around to take a look. The LO file contains the SKP file so it was easy enough to take a look.

Barry e-mailed me because he was having difficulty logging in to SCF. He said some fonts don't contain authorization to be embedded and that can cause problems Not sure it's the case this time but maybe. I wonder if it is possible one source for the font might have it without authorization while another does have it with authorization.

Barry also suggests trying to run LO as administrator. Right click on the icon and and choose Run as administrator.

Regarding Country Blueprint, can you verify that the font you downloaded has the right to embed? We've had customers who get a font and think they're good, but if the font isn't licensed properly (to allow export), it wont work.
