Moving in small increments
-
Whenever I try to move an object, say to get one object to butt up against another object, the smallest increment it will move at a time is 1/16". Is there any way to move objects more accurately, in smaller increments? 1/16" is way to big for my purposes. Thanks in advance

Just move the object in the opposite direction about an inch or more, then move back to the precise location.

Also, it seems that length snapping is on for you. Go to window > model info > units and turn it off.
If you want to always have it this way, open a new model file, do this (and/or any other) change(s) and save it as a template under the file menu.
Now open window > preferences and select this newly created template as your default one under the templates tab.

Thanks for the replies. But length strapping is not checked, so why is it doing this? Thanks

Why not just type the distance you want to move the selection and hit the Enter key? Start it moving in the desired direction before typing the distance.
If you want to move the selection relative to some existing point in the model, make sure you grab the selection by a point that will correspond to the existing point in the model. See this for ideas.

Well, that is the smallest "jump" SU always makes when moving geometry. Unless you override that movement by your digital input. (after moving just type 0.001" and that will be the moved distance. Or better, just take advantage of inferencing or snapping to other geometry.
You seemed to want to butt up against..., so carefully select the first objects point and move it towards the second objects point (end- or midpoint or on edge or on face or whatever).
(I never take notice of what/how much SU decides to move objects that I are handling, don't even take notice of length snapping being on or off. Although when ON it is always as short as possible!!).I most seldom have accuracy problems in modelling with SU.

Thanks to everyone for the help, it's nice to know a newbie isn't treated like some sort of nuisance here. I've been in some forums that treat them really badly, talking down to them and making fun of their lack of experience. Like they didn't start out as a newbie. And Dave, that video was a GREAT help, I learned a lot from it. Videos, at least well made videos, can be a lot more meaningful than just reading about it somewhere. Again, thanks.

I found the solution to this problem, the Nudge plugin from Smustard. Works fantastic!

Another little tip, if you scale your whole model up by a factor of 10 you have further to move things, then just scale it down again when you have finished. This helps with small faces that SU doesn't like also.
