Roof problem.
-
Hi guys,
Just wondering what the best way (i.e. how would you ...) create the junctions on SU where roofing beams meet?
For example, I'm drawing up a shelter where you us half round timber on the top and 4" x 2" underneath 18mm polycarb sheeting? It's a real pain sorting out the junctions where the shelter goes round a right angle. At the mo I'm creating a line and follow me-ing where the spars should be.
Any ideas?

I hope your 'rafters' etc are groups or components.
If component-instances then use make_unique on the corner ones you need to 'miter'.
Draw a large vertical rectangular face 'plane' away from other geometry and group it.
Move the group to the corner and rotate it about the z/blue axis 45 degrees [or other snapped angle to suit] so it passes through the corner where the 'miters' should be.
Edit a 'rafter' instance and select all of its geometry.
Use 'Intersect with Model' to cut at the placed 'plane'.
Erase the unwanted bits of rafter.
Repeat for the other 'rafters'...
Alternatively add a raking hip-beam instance/group under the mitered rafters OR place it aligning with there tops and intersect with model to that and then erase back the unwanted bits as before... -
hi,
there may be easier ways and if using pro8 there are some new solids tools which make this very easy but I would create the mitre using intersect.Take your rafter component and draw a cutting plane which intersects at 45deg (image 01).
I see TIG has beaten me to this so I'll attach the image and leave it there.
hope this helps

Wouldn't you have a tie beam the runs diagonally (in the horizontal plane) and then a hip rafter?
What holds those mitered corners up? -
Thanks for the comments, guys, much appreciated and food for thought.

The image shows three separate corner configurations. Why not use the power of components to your advantage and make three corner connectors. Given the fact the component definition is invariant under move, scale and rotation you should be able to use these in a number of different loactions without the intersection etc each time??
