Aligning faces
-
Hi folks,
I'm a builder who has unfortunately become addicted to Sketchup. But I'm building in sketchup like I build a house and I'm in the process of relearning. I'm attaching a skp file detailing a question: is there an easy way to align faces? I get in the middle of a complex roof and change many things and then one roof plane is the tiniest bit out of alignment with an adjacent one and I can't get a face. Any suggestions to make it easier or faster would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

thanks for the help! that was very generous of you to put that much time in..... learning when to select face, when to select face and edges, when to make into group etc.....when to not be afraid to erase a big chunk and start over!

Thanks for the compliment... what's the use knowing some useful stuff and keeping it to yourself ?

Wish I'd known (or figured out) the move copy face trick long before struggling with roof faces. I always think it all has to be done with lines. One can also cut a piece of the plane and move that, say if you want to move a leg off sideways. Thanks for posting these solutions TIG and Brookefox.

you could try the unfold tool plugin. aligned the two faces with 2 clicks!
unless of course you're actually trying to align the edges of the faces and not actually make the faces themselves coplanar??

Thanks for thanking! You are welcome!!

A nice trick I like to use is the following, but mathematically not exactly the same as the above options. It's very fast though, and versatile.
- Activate pencil tool
- Hold mouse over rectangle (or any other desired face) until it says 'on face'
- from then on, hold shift.
- draw any desired shape, aligning with points or lines already in the drawing (NB: aligning with a line is not the same thing as aligning with a point!)
- after finishing the shape, release shift.
