Double Curved Roof?
-
Hey,
Before I start asking for help (as I always do) I just want to thank everyone for their responses, great tips and advice.
End of my grovelling
I've attached a picture of the 'Birds Nest' in Beijing. I would love to know I would draw something like this in SU. I'm really interested in how to make the top, how it curves and goes towards the ground (if that makes sense)
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thank you

'With difficulty' is probably the easiest answer to give.
More helpfully, id probably start by stretching the top of a cylinder to get the elliptic shape then use 'intersect with' to get the downward curve. Lastly, you could use fred06's roundcorner plugin to get the edges nice and curvy.
Depending on how much detail you want and how much time you want to spend, you could then either phototexture it (the easy option) or use a combination of whaats zorro tool and joint pushpull to get the mesh like structure.
I'll do a quick tutorial, give us a sec...

A try my
ExtendEdgesByRails

and related tools ?yeah, the extrude edges tools will come in very handy for drawing things like the bird'snest..
you can get real curvy with it (and clean too! & relatively quick)
[sorry i don't have much time to give an example for greensaint's question.. just saying that it is very possible to draw that in sketchup.]

Heres a quick tut using the method i described.
Its worth trying to do it with TIGs extrude edges though, as i encountered a small snag in the method i described in that roundcorner doesnt work very well.

Hey,
Thanks for all your quick responses - and thanks Remus for the tutorial file.
I'll have a play around with something this weekend and post what I come up with. What I want to produce is like half the birds nest, but half of it with the slope near to the ground....a bit like this
That's the plan anyway

This is a tutorial on EEbyRails by 'Arc' http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?p=217839#p217839
The final frames show a result not very dissimilar to what you want ? -
Hey,
Thanks TIG - that's great
Sorry for all the questions (I am a newbie after all!) How would I get the bird nest type roof on that curved building as per the video?
Does that make sense? Is it even possible?!
Thank you again

It is very possible, depending on your hardware. I say this because I am imagining lots of loose geometry, groups and components. And processing horsepower will be needed for good progress. Or you draw a line wait a minute draw another line wait another minute...
It helps to plan this out and real scale also helps. -

Thank you againYou'll need to do some manual work once you have the basic form...
I am working on other EEtools that will extrude faces along edges and also rails/profiles to make 'lattices' - but that won't be ready for a while... -
