PhilcoPC - Why don't we do something similar...??
-
Good idea, and it would be a good way to get more exposure for SCF.
-
What categories should be covered? There is a very broad spectrum of SketchUp users here If we can progress this ideas I could try to get some sponsorship (prizes) to make it worth while and interesting for contestants.

Don't know...
Perhaps someone have some good ideas with real life projects...? -
This sounds like a great idea
Maybe post a poll to establish interest levels? Solo initially polled members for his 'Model This' challenge and the feedback was extremely positive,
With prizes at stake, i think there should be defined rules as it potentially could get messy [IMO]
What do others think?

I'll second Rich's comments. Sounds like a good idea.

Why not something that covers all bases?
Architects can design a car showroom.
Landscape architects can design the setting.
Vehicle designers can design the products on display.
Furniture designers can design the interior furnishings.
...and so on.

Why don't we try to get in contact with some design schools and ask if they have some real life projects, where we can help out...??
I'm certain that someone would be very interested in this and we would be able to find sponsors for prizes etc...A quick search with Google reveals that all countries have their own design schools, so we could contact some of them, tell them about the idea we have and what we can offer...
It's important to mention that this is on a volunteer basis...
Users joining in won't get paid for whatever they contribute with, but winners can be rewarded with various prizes...
(I've been in contact with Adobe previously, and they seem very open to sponsor some application suits and I would assume that Google SU also would contribute for something like this...)The idea behind all this derives from all the (in fairness) non-purpose modelling- and render challenges we've seen over the past years...
If we can start a challenge with a real life purpose, I'm sure we will get more respect within the 3D community... -

I know they do.

If this is going to be a design contest done with a CG tool, like sketchup, maybe some manufactures maybe be contacted for sponsor this, Nvidia, Dell, ATI, Alienware (and google can also give a free sketchup pro version of course) and such are knonw to sponsor stuff like this in the CG society contests, of course this is going to be a much smaller scale contest so the prizes should also be much smaller. And that contest are very creative and really push the users foward in every direction and not just in modeling. This should be the objective in here too

Well, there are contests whose rules are defined by others - we can only help connecting people (such as get Google to "join" the contest and offer some Pro versions as prizes).
In other cases, we may influence the rules better of course.
