Is there a setting to control the node spacing when using the freehand tool?

NO.
But my 2D Tool's Freehand does allow you to set the segment length...

DonnaYou could as well try the FreeHand tool of ToolsOnSurface, which includes the setting of the node spacing in pixel (or allow a point on click mode without inference).
