"locked" groups and components

Being about 18 months behind the times, I only learned about locked components and groups today.
It looks like locked items cannot be copied, deleted, or edited unless you unlock them first.
Does "locked" have any other values - besides slowing down users who want to edit a group or component.

? Odd way to describe them. It's not to slow anyone down. It is to do exactly what you described: Prevent them from begin "copied, deleted, or edited unless you unlock them first".

Yes - I guess so. But it reminds me of "locked" excel spread sheets - we couldn't really lock them, we could just make it a little harder for people to change them. (This was several years ago, they may improved their locking by now)
The locked feature on groups and components is marked as SU 6. If it was added that recently, I wonder why they didn't invent some kind of owner/password scheme for it. (Of course, it they had, someone would have had to find a way to remove the password - e.g. save as DAE and reload.)

i don't think it's that type of lock (preventing other people from doing something with it)
suppose you have a complex drawing with all sorts of components added in the mix.. you could window select the whole piece (for instance) and delete the unlocked components while the locked ones will stay.
it's more to do with helping you model and nothing to do with the 'security' of your model.
same thing as locking a layer in photoshop etc..

All Google Earth import terrain comes in as a locked group. That is about the only time I really deal with lcked groups. Though I have considered using them in some of my plugins where I don't want the user to change things inside of special groups I make.

I just checked with SU5 - no locking feature. Though, the manual never reports anything less than SU6.
The Locking is like you'd use in Photoshop, Illustrator etc, as Jeff mentioned. Also in AutoCAD. It's not to prevent other people from ever from editing it. It's just a safety mechanism to protect you from yourself when you're being a bit zealous with the selection tool and eraser.
I use when I import CAD plans into SU to model from. I lock the imported plan while I model on top of it. That way I ensure that I don't confidentially move the plan around and mess things up.
Password protecting it would be going a bit far.
Locking is just something which forces you to be 100% conscious that you actually want to edit/delete an object.
