Good idea Pete...you know you can count me in. I LOVE to model!
Here's an idea. We have a "Model This" challenge, but exclude texturing all together. All models are presented with hidden geometry on and no rendering, albeit perhaps a clay render. The community chooses the best model based on cleanliness vs. poly count and the winning model is then offered up for download and submitted as the next "Render This" challenge.

Adam, that sounds like a great idea.
I was waiting for 100 yes votes then asking y'all what types of models should be requested, I did not want to jump into organics just yet and also wanted to not make it too dificult initially as alienating noobs is not my intention, but rather encouraging them to try. Failure is a big part of learning IMO.
So what shall we model?, something that folks will enjoy, something that folks could use and something that will interest most users.
ideas?

Should the models be of exactly the same object? For example rather that picking a screwdriver and getting different variations, the challenge would be -
Model this.....
Then everyone would be playing the same tune?

Rich, that's pretty much the idea, a picture of an object is posted and we all try model it by 'eyeballing' the dimensions, so without getting too technical with exact dimensions we will try and model the exact same item.
However this is just my idea, what do y'all think? -
I like the idea of it being "useful" (does that mean by posting you agree to let people freely use your scene?)
But I'd prefer it to be more "conceptual", otherwise everyone's models will look the same, won't they?

seems like a variety of methods could be used depending on skill level and amount of detail you'd like to go for. -
And the modeler who makes the best model will post a tutorial about how to do it? -should this be a rule of this game? (i like to name it a game)

I like the idea of a set, specific object being created; on the same page, as was mentioned. Otherwise, you say "make a screwdriver," and you have 20 different items from a standard slotted screwdriver to a powered portable driver. I don't think the objects should be totally simple, but should allow people to try to push their boundaries a bit in modeling and texturing.

i think something not too specific would expose us to more techniques and styles. say model a hand tool, a power tool, a bicycle, a kitchen appliance, a piece of furniture ... and if we try to keep it more towards architectural/decor things we should get a lot more useful models out of the deal.

I would agree, and If it is too complex a model, I probably won't be able to participate, mostly because of time constraints (unless it's broken into components, ie this challenge is a bicycle wheel, next one is the seat etc)

I'm in the same position Dale is in, I cannot participate in the challenges that have a pretty extensive amount of modeling due to time constraints. I love the idea of smaller objects that will create a challenge. I really could use some challenges to help me with my modeling skills. Truth be told I'm not that great of a modeler

Does this sound reasonable? I'm just trying to summarize the overall mood of the responses so far and in no way coerce the discussion away from those that think it should be more challenging and concept orientated.
Maybe Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced Challenges that would neatly tie into 'Render This' Challenge? Or is this too confusing?
