i found a good and very simple interim solution
im using the windows explorer. i choose thumbnails and just drag&drop the components into the sketchup window.
      works for me just fine

I'd love to be able to do that but I can't see a preview image in my thumbnails which is really annoying 😒

I had that problem on Vista Ultimate 64. If you open Explorer and go to Tools, Folder Options, View Tab, there should be a setting for turning on image previewing. Unlike XP, Vista doesn't have a 'Thumbnail' view. You just set the size of the icons, and they will be the image preview, if you have the correct option turned on.

I've tried everything to get my thumbnails to show the component but nothing has worked. See this thread, http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=16015

As Thomthom said, I think its just a problem with Vista (one of many!)

No, not Vista - 64bit Windows. My 32bit Vista display .skp thumbs just fine, but my windows7 64bit doesn't. I expect hat XP 64bit also fails to display thumbs.

Side by side installs of SU7 and any previous version can screw up skp thumbnails in XP, the same probably applies for other MS OS's. I haven't worked out the "logic" behind this bug as it affects some skp files, but not others. You'd think it would be skp files saved in the previous version format that wouldn't display as thumbnails (or vice versa), but it's not as simple as that; it appears to affect skp files at random regardless of version format.

Still not a peep from Google on this? What gives? Most of the well known people here and at Google groups, not to mention blogs all over WWW have been complaining about this.

SketchUp 8 is coming Google, could you please just do a copy/paste from the previous code so we can get our back button?

Good point Solo, we should give them the benefit of the doubt here and wait for SU8...

I have a feeling that we are seen as rats in a lab by Google... they are watching our reactions and don't give a damn... And I bet they are laughing too! They said: "this people are expecting several features to be fixed, well... let's give them just some speed improvement and see the reaction."
It would be appreciated at least a word from them... but Google is silent like a stone when is coming about answering questions. But, in exchange they know how to promote everything. I always liked those sketchup promoting videos like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PLSlHbQ-bc, or the comic book for Google Chrome πŸ˜„ . Actually that video with Aiden convinced me to try SketchUp. But all these convince me that we ar just lab rats... they give us candies, but no answers... we don't worth such an effort? 😒

Isn't speed improvement the most asked for improvement to SU? "Just some speed improvement"?

The toolbar issue would be high up there. But we've gotten speed improvement and the Back button back. Not bad for a point release.
