OBJ Import
-
Strange how we can export OBJ but can't import it. There is a plugin that does it but it seems to have major limitations.
Would be very nice...
-
Your next plug?
-
-
which plug do you use i know of two?
-
Is there one that maintains UV coordinates? I only know of one plugin. Do you have link for the two you know of?
-
there's jf's http://www.scriptspot.com/sketchup/script/obj-importer which i imagine you could modify if you knew what you were doing, this is probably the one you use.
then there's http://www.sycode.com/products/obj_import_su/index.htm which i doubt you'll wanna pay $195 for cause it dosn't seem to do anything the free one doesn't?
neither one will import textures for me, as far as UV, ??? i doubt it but i'm no expert. If you do update the jf one somehow please let us know

To be honest, A good .FBX importer would be nice to have .(Sketchup can currently export FBX but not import it)
FBX holds uv mappings and is actually a more advanced version of .3ds so there is no polycount limit. -
agreed, Whaat, we are hurtin' for a 'real' or 'useful' .obj importer... it would rock.
fbx is an open 3D format, which supports cams and mat'ls. it is mainly used by Revit to bring the model into Max... would be awesome to bring it into SU via FBX import, as KB said above.
I will mention, though, for Revit users importing into SU is easy w/ CAD export... but also there's ability to export as IFC and use the importer ruby available here.
but I just brought my last Revit model into SU, (exported from Revit as CAD format) and had no probs... nice and clean - much better than ADT objects exploded and brought in... way better.

I vote is for FBX.
-
my experience w/ FBX is that it comes out twice the size of other formats... not sure why.
-
I can live with the extra size. Disk space is cheap. The other formats just doesn't seem to cut ut. 3ds for instance is to old it can only have meshed with less than 32K polygons and texture filenames are trunkated to the old 8.3 DOS type for naming to name a couple.
