3d view feature on the 3d Warehouse
-
Hey everyone,
I apologize if anyone has already pointed this out, but I wanted to highlight a new feature on the 3dwh and get your feedback. Some of you may find this really useful. You can read about it on the blog:

Cheers,

What does someone who works for Google know about searching, eh?

Scott, that is an awesome feature. makes the warehouse a lot more useful and comfortable (enjoyable) to use. really great. and it is damn fast as well!
how are you doing it? is an image series created when the model is uploaded?

laying the smack down!
I agree with Plot, It really is a great added feature. No matter what voodoo you guys pulled off to get it to work.

You got it. This processing takes some time, so you won't see your 3d view instantly after upload... but come back later and you'll be in business. The whole idea is to provide a lightweight 3d view without the need for special plugins.

Scott, is this an improvement on the web exporter plugin in the SketchUp downloads section, or the same version? I notice that it now has large rotate arrows over the image window, which weren't there before.

It's more of a variation than an improvement. Same idea, though.

Just noticed this, really nice feature.
Didn't someone here suggest that awhile back? I was thinking Plot since he's always inventing cool stuff for Google to work on but he didn't take credit so maybe I made the whole thing up?

Hehe... A bit late Scott:

I definitely like this new feature as well as the 3D map introduced a while ago.
When are we going to have rich(er) text (or html) content in the descriptions in the WH?

Is there a way for us to use this to create interactive 3D models on our own web pages?
Or is it only available for models which are shared on the 3D Warehouse?
-
It's basically the new(ish) SketchUp Web Exporter. You can find it under the plugins list. Pretty nifty tool depending on what you're modeling. If you want to show someone a bookcase, it could be very handy. If you're showing them a 2 story house w/ site it's probably not very handy because you can't really do much w/ how it wants to rotate around the model.

Also,Al,at the very bottom of the page of the individual models, there is an "Include" button that opens a link for an iFrame which you can simply add to your site.

Thanks, Gai.
My question was in relation to people who want to share images from their projects - but don't want to make the .SKP models public - which is necessary if you place them on the 3D warehouse.
The 3D image exporter will work well for this.

I was looking at doing something similar to this on our site.. There is an opensource flash library called 'Papervision 3D' which has support for collada files.. so in theory you could create a flash widget which would load a collada version of the 3d model and let you zoom and pan around it at will
Obviously this would only work for smaller models, but that is the focus of our site. Maybe sometime soon!
