      Hi folks,

SketchUp videos tuts are very common on YouTube, and i've no idea on how i can make one.
Perhaps i'm the only one who don't know! Well, if someone could tell me the better way, it would be very kind...

          Hi Simon,

Before Christmas, Camtasia released its version 3 for free (for a couple of weeks only) and I have that now - really like it. But it's a bit expensive for the full, recent version.

Before I used Aviscreen Classic, a freeware software to record whatever is happening on the screen. It has a couple of codec types and options and can produce bearable quality videos (which Iusually post-edited in other apps).

You might want to try Fraps ($37). http://www.fraps.com/

That's what I use at work for everything and that's how we make our trailers. You will need another application to re-compress the file into something viewable to everyone (.avi or .mov). I use Premiere, but you can use VirtualDub for free.

One drawback is that it doesn't record your sidebar menus. It only records the work area of SU. So if you want the menus to appear you have to tear them off and place them over the work area. Otherwise it works like a dream.

I've tried Camtasia, Captivate and Camstudio (free) and I've had technical problems with all of them. You might have better luck so try them out. I've had zero problems with Fraps.

Or there's the freeware app. Wink... 😉
It's distributed as freeware for business or personal use...
Output formats: Macromedia Flash, Standalone EXE, PDF, PostScript, HTML or any of the above image formats. Use Flash/html for the web, EXE for distributing to PC users and PDF for printable manuals.
If you want the tutorials to be published using YouTube, you can convert the Flash files to AVI video files... 😉

              Cheers

Yeah, Wink (whose name just did not come to my mind) is a nice app - Coen used to create a lot of his video tuts with this program!

I used to use CamStudio before I also got Camtasia 3 for free during a promotion. I haven't tried it recently.

                  Hi

Can't try anything for few days, but i'm listening to you. Very interesting to see that there is no common solution, but everyone with his own.

Searching the web seeded by your comments, i've seen Camtasia probably the best tool, and i've missed the free v3.
I have also heard of open source Camstudio,
                    Captivate from Adobe
and seem's to be a promising free soft: Jing a Thai open source application written in Java..?

to be followed +++to everybody :-)slb.

Well well, work hard to install and compare.

Dear Gaieus,i have downloaded in time Wondershare DemoCreator you've kindly pointed on.
I'm now going to speak about the various possibilities to make video tuts:
Wondershare DemoCreator _ Wink _ Camstudio_ Aviscreen Classic _ AutoScreen Recorder V3.0 Free _ and, Camtasia v3 (i have found on Ebay).

Wondershare DemoCreator Works the same way as Wink. They take screen snapshots mixed with a moving pointer and various possibilities to put text and so on. WD versus Wink: Wink does the job as well, perhaps better because it is more flexible. And Wink is free. They are good to do some kind of job we can insert in a tutorial, but for the first matter which is to capture moving objects on Sketchup screen, they are out.

Other softs take real avi videos on what happens on screen. Camstudio, Aviscreen Classic are free, simple and work intelligently but::: pictures quality detail are not enough good and lack of fluidity. AutoScreen Recorder V3.0 Free gives better quality results, but:: this free version clamp lot of things: no sound, no editor,etc... So, with regret, i take it before the other two.
If i summarize, we can compose a tutorial pack with: Wink + AutoScreen Recorder(thanks Howard L') + VirtualDub or AviSplit (to assembl avi files).

And i have now Camtasia3. It is far far ahead for others. And::: And I do not know how they can do that but the files that result weigh ten times less!! So:: good saving money( for a buying opportunity).

                          ;-)simonlebon

Well, I also have Camtasia 3 (downloaded/installed when there was a frrebie period some time around december) and YES, it is superior to the others I have. And yes, it can create very small files with seemingly lossless compression. I like it.
