[Plugin] Skin.rb

Elegance in programming is next to godliness.

Nice work! Thanks.
-
So I now have this thing working quite well, but as it is getting close to Christmas I think that I will wait until Christmas to let out the next version, which will hopefully be the final version.
-
Well, it's the night before when I hoped to have this script done, but I only have a beta version. Tomorrow is packed and the next day we go to the grandparents house. I don't have a tutorial ready yet, and I won't until I bring out the final version, so you will have to figure out the new GUI on your own. But anyway, Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all!
PS. The clean selection operation currently occasionally locks sketchup up - save before using it!

I've only played around with skin direct and so far so good. Nice job! I noticed that if the selected curves (edges) are inside a group, that the resulting surfaces are placed OUTSIDE of that group. I like this because this maintains the properties of the original curves (ie., they don't get subdivided).
Is there anyway to allow orbiting or panning while the "query" dialogs are on screen?

Oh is it really like that? I didn't even notice! Realy cool feature (and Darrel, DON'T fix this thinking it's a bug (if you think it is)!
If anyone wants to put the resulting mesh back to the group, he/she can cut/paste in place within the group but keeping the original entity gives a way better advantage. -
Thanks Darrel for all your hard work creating this script.
I hope Santa brings you something nice.Regards, Ross

Has skin ruby been updated to do a smooth mesh?
-
This is the closest thing to a Loft script for which i have been making requests for years.
Thanks Architectboy for all your hard work. Are there any new developments this year around your Skin.rb ? This has a lot of potential -
i could not figure this one out
-
Wow I see my auto smooth idea got put in? I 100% forgot that I had suggested that until just now reading through the script. Now coming back to this I think I have to give it a try again.

There is a bug in SketchUp where regular Edges - which it shows as stray Edges - are in fact Edges which should smooth with the Soften Edges panel, but do not.
Coen, I think you'll find that if you check "Soften coplanar" in the Soften Edges dialog SU will indeed smooth those edges, and with the slider set well below 180 degrees (like <20).

I know Voder, but those Edges should be smoothed.
I'm not sure I follow your point, Coen. You have just restated your original premise but offered no rationale. As I said, they are smoothed when you check the soften coplanar check box. When I measure the included angle between the faces that share the edges in question, I get values in the range of ~179.974 to ~180.026. Clearly, within the tolerange range of the Soften dialog, those faces are coplanar, so the behavior of the Soften dialog is consistent, although the faces are not coplanar to the degree of precision that would allow the edges to be removed altogether. Notice, the decimal precision of the Soften dialog is only one place.

I submitted this bug to Google when we were testing v5, but they haven't fixed it yet.
Well that doesn't prove anything other than you thought it was a bug then and you still do now. To me, it seems like reasonable program behavior within the limits of precision of the smooth/soften dialog. Did @Last ever acknowledge that it was a bug? Did they state that they planned to "fix" it?

Wow, I have been gone for quite a while and half expected this topic to be very idle, but apparently I am mistaken. I don't know what to say but that I will see if I can get back to working on this soon, hopefully it won't have to wait until summer break. I'm stunned at how long it has been since I released the last version, which is still lacking many planned features.

skin does not work for me. it shows in the toolbar list but nothing appears on screen, i have no icons to make it run. could it be because i am on mac?
-
do you have the latest skin22.rb? get it here if not.

I'm hoping I can get the problem I'm having sorted out. I've tried downloading and re-downloading the skin.rb with the icons but I just can't get it to show. I've made sure it's placed correctly, made sure it has been enabled, tried moving the icons from the skin folder to the main plugins folder (where the skin.rb resides) doesn't make a difference.
Any ideas people?
